Abu Dhabi Teacher Jailed for Assaulting Four Students in Classroom

A teacher in Abu Dhabi has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of physically assaulting four students at a private school. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has also ordered his deportation following the completion of his sentence and instructed him to cover all court-related fees.

The incident occurred inside a classroom during a lesson, where the teacher struck the students, causing injuries that prevented them from carrying out their daily activities for up to 20 days.

According to the court proceedings, the teacher admitted to assaulting the children during the investigation and subsequent court hearings. He claimed that his actions were intended to control disruptive behaviour and prevent the students from creating disturbances during the lesson.

However, the court found that his explanation did not justify the use of physical violence against the students.

CCTV Footage Supports Allegations

Evidence presented during the case included CCTV recordings from inside the classroom. The footage supported the teacher’s confession and documented the physical violence inflicted on the students.

In its judgment, the court emphasised that such conduct violated applicable laws and regulations. It highlighted the importance of enforcing legal protections to safeguard public safety, protect individual rights and prevent acts that threaten people’s security and wellbeing.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said the court considered the location and circumstances of the assault significant factors in its decision. The incident took place within an educational institution and during teaching hours, raising concerns about the safety of students in a setting where they should be protected.

The court noted that violence in schools undermines personal safety and can affect the security and stability of individuals.

Physical Abuse of Students Is Prohibited in the UAE

Physical violence by teachers against students is prohibited under UAE law and may result in criminal prosecution, imprisonment, fines and additional disciplinary measures, depending on the nature of the offence.

The National Child Protection Policy in Educational Institutions, introduced in 2022, defines physical abuse as causing physical injury or harm to a child, or failing or being unwilling to take action to prevent such harm.

The policy reinforces the responsibility of educational institutions to provide a safe environment for children and protect them from abuse.

Under the UAE Crimes and Penalties Law, assault that results in injury or illness can carry criminal penalties, including imprisonment and financial fines. The punishment depends on the circumstances of the offence and the extent of the harm caused.

The case highlights the legal consequences of physical violence against students and the importance of maintaining safe learning environments across the UAE.
