A kitten in Sharjah has been safely rescued after remaining trapped inside a lift for nearly 24 hours, following an online appeal that quickly gained widespread attention and prompted efforts to locate and free the stranded animal.
Sharjah Kitten Rescued After Spending 24 Hours Trapped in Lift.

Since the rescue, the mother cat and her three little kittens have formed a touching bond with the rescuers, regularly approaching them and meowing whenever they head out for work, seemingly showing their affection and gratitude for the care they received.
Midnight Rescue in Sharjah Saves Kitten Trapped in Elevator for More Than a Day
What began as the persistent sound of a cat meowing in a residential building in Sharjah eventually turned into an overnight rescue mission involving a group of determined young residents, a trapped kitten and a little help from strangers online.
Nine residents of an apartment building in Muweilah found themselves spending much of the night trying to work out how to save a tiny street kitten that had become trapped inside the building’s elevator. The animal had reportedly been stuck for more than 24 hours, while its mother remained nearby, repeatedly calling out.
The residents initially had no idea what was wrong. When they first heard the cat making noise in the building corridor, they assumed it might simply be hungry or thirsty. Before leaving for work, they searched around the area but could not immediately locate the source of the cries.
Rather than ignore the animal, they decided to leave food and water outside and continue with their day.
However, when they returned later, the persistent meowing had not stopped.
Strange cries lead residents to investigate
Salman Faris, one of the residents involved in the rescue, recalled that the cat was still making noise when the men came back from work.
At first, they were confused about why the animal was refusing the food and water they had left behind. A closer look revealed that neither appeared to have been touched.
That raised concerns among the residents.
They realised the cat had apparently been crying for many hours without eating or drinking. The situation seemed unusual enough that the men decided to investigate more carefully.
Using torches, they began searching the building and surrounding areas to determine where the sound was coming from. Their search eventually led them toward the elevator.
It was close to midnight by the time they understood what was happening.
The cat making the noise was not simply a hungry stray. It was the mother of a kitten that had somehow become trapped inside the elevator.
Once the residents discovered that a young kitten was stuck, their priorities changed. They knew the animal needed to be removed from the lift as soon as possible.
An urgent problem after midnight
The group began looking for a way to reach the kitten. Their first attempts, however, were unsuccessful.
With the animal trapped inside the elevator and its mother waiting outside, the residents faced a difficult situation. They wanted to help, but they did not have the equipment or technical knowledge normally required to access the lift safely.
The building also did not have a regular watchman who could immediately assist them, making the situation even more complicated.
As the night progressed, the residents considered seeking professional help.
They contacted the Sharjah fire station, hoping emergency personnel might be able to assist with the rescue. However, they were advised to approach the municipality for help with the animal.
By then, it was around 1am.
For most people, the late hour would have meant waiting until morning. But the residents were reluctant to leave the kitten trapped overnight.
Ajmal, who lived with Salman, said the men knew that contacting the municipality would likely have to wait until morning. Yet going to bed while knowing that a small animal was still trapped inside the lift did not feel like an option.
The mother cat continued to meow in the corridor, seemingly unwilling to leave the area.
The residents therefore decided to keep looking for another solution.
When traditional methods failed, they turned online
After trying several approaches without success, the group decided to seek assistance from the wider online community.
They recorded a video showing the situation and posted it on social media. Along with the footage, they explained that the kitten was trapped inside the elevator and asked viewers whether anyone knew a practical way to rescue it.
The response came surprisingly quickly.
According to Ajmal, one person responded within approximately ten minutes with a suggestion that eventually helped the group solve the problem.
The online user proposed opening the elevator doors from another floor and using a rope to reach the trapped kitten.
The idea gave the residents a possible way forward.
Instead of waiting until daylight, some members of the group went to a higher floor of the building. They worked to open the lift door and then attempted to lower a rope into the elevator area.
The plan was simple but required considerable care. The objective was to reach the kitten without hurting it and bring it out of the confined space.
After their earlier failed attempts, the residents finally managed to reach the animal.
They carefully used the rope to pull the kitten out of the lift and bring it to safety.
A tense rescue after hours of uncertainty
The rescue was not simply a matter of opening a door and picking up the kitten. The men had spent hours trying to understand what had happened and determine how they could safely reach the animal.
By the time the successful attempt took place, it was deep into the night.
Salman later described the experience as stressful because the residents wanted to help but were unsure how to access the elevator safely.
The lack of a building watchman also meant they could not simply ask someone responsible for the lift to open or operate it.
The group had to rely on their own efforts, as well as advice from people who saw their social media post.
Fortunately, their rescue operation took place at a time when most of the residents in the building were asleep. This meant the group had fewer interruptions as they worked on getting the kitten out.
After finally retrieving the animal, the residents cleaned it and reunited it with its mother.
For the men who had spent much of the night working on the rescue, seeing the kitten safely back with its mother was a relief.
Rescue videos attract millions of views
The story did not end when the kitten was pulled from the elevator.
Salman shared footage of the rescue on his Instagram account, including video showing the mother cat and the successful effort to retrieve her kitten.
The footage quickly attracted widespread attention online.
The videos reportedly accumulated more than 12 million views, with many viewers praising the residents for refusing to give up on the trapped animal despite the late hour and the difficulties they encountered.
What began as a local incident inside an apartment building had suddenly become a widely viewed story on social media.
Many people were particularly touched by the fact that the residents continued their efforts long after midnight instead of waiting until the following morning.
The episode also demonstrated how quickly an online community can sometimes contribute practical ideas in an emergency involving an animal.
In this case, a suggestion from someone who was not physically present at the building helped the residents identify a possible method of reaching the kitten.
A mother cat that refused to leave
The behaviour of the mother cat was another memorable part of the incident.
When the residents first heard the continuous meowing, they did not know that one of her kittens was trapped. They initially assumed the animal might simply need food or water.
But the mother remained close to the elevator, continuing to make noise while the residents tried to understand what was wrong.
Once they discovered the trapped kitten, her behaviour made more sense.
She had apparently remained near the area where her baby was stuck, calling out while the residents worked to find a solution.
For the rescuers, this made the situation even more difficult to ignore.
They knew the mother was waiting nearby and that the kitten could not get out on its own.
The residents therefore continued their efforts despite the hour.
Life returns to normal after the rescue
After the kitten was freed, cleaned and returned to its mother, the residents might have expected the unusual episode to be over.
Instead, the cats became familiar visitors to the men.
Ajmal said that the mother cat and her three kittens continued to approach the residents whenever they were leaving for work.
The cats would reportedly come toward them while meowing, becoming a regular part of their daily routine.
The three kittens were also described as particularly mischievous.
Ajmal joked about their adventurous behaviour, saying the kittens were extremely naughty and that the residents were not entirely surprised that one of them had managed to get into trouble.
The residents could laugh about the incident afterward, but they clearly hoped there would not be another elevator-related adventure in the future.
For them, the experience had been a reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can turn into an unexpected rescue mission.
A small rescue that brought strangers together
The incident also highlighted the role that ordinary residents can play when an animal is in distress.
The men were not professional animal rescuers. They did not have specialised equipment or a dedicated rescue team at their disposal. What they had was a willingness to investigate the problem, remain with the animal and search for a solution.
When their own attempts failed, they sought assistance from authorities. When that did not provide an immediate answer, they turned to social media.
That decision ultimately connected them with someone who had a practical suggestion.
The online response arrived within minutes, and the advice gave the group a new approach to try.
The successful rescue was therefore the result of several small efforts coming together: the residents noticing the cat, investigating the repeated cries, identifying the trapped kitten, seeking professional guidance, asking the internet for help and finally carrying out the rescue themselves.
The episode also shows why unusual sounds from animals should not always be ignored.
What initially sounded like a stray cat simply calling for attention turned out to be a mother trying to reach her trapped baby.
An overnight effort worth remembering
For the nine residents involved, the rescue meant sacrificing several hours of sleep and spending much of the night trying to solve a problem they had never expected to encounter.
They had already completed their working day, returned home and discovered that the mother cat was still crying.
Instead of walking away, they stayed to investigate.
Their first attempts did not work. Their call for assistance did not immediately produce a solution. And the clock continued moving toward morning.
Still, they kept searching for an answer.
The breakthrough eventually came from an unexpected source: a stranger online who suggested a way to reach the kitten from another floor.
The residents acted on that advice and were able to bring the animal out.
The reunion with its mother brought an end to what had been a tense night for both the kitten and its rescuers.
The subsequent viral response transformed the small rescue into a much larger story, with millions of people watching the footage and reacting to the residents’ efforts.
From frightened kitten to familiar visitor
The rescued kitten was eventually back where it belonged — with its mother and siblings.
The cats’ continued visits to the residents added a lighter ending to what had initially been a worrying situation.
Every time the men prepared to leave for work, the mother cat and her three kittens reportedly approached them, meowing as if they had become accustomed to the people who had helped them.
The kittens’ playful behaviour also became a source of amusement for the residents.
Although the men could now look back on the incident with humour, they remained hopeful that the young cats would avoid another dangerous situation.
For one small kitten, however, the night had ended with a fortunate escape.
For its mother, it meant being reunited with her baby.
And for the Sharjah residents who stayed awake into the early hours, it became an unexpected story of persistence, teamwork and a little assistance from strangers on the internet.
What started with a mysterious sound in a residential corridor ultimately brought together neighbours, authorities, social-media users and animal lovers — all connected by the simple goal of getting one trapped kitten safely back to its family.
