In a video released on Wednesday, the RTA provided a behind-the-scenes look at the complex underground operations involved before a metro station can be constructed. The footage highlighted how much of the work takes place beneath the surface, where engineers carefully prepare tunnels that will eventually support passenger services.

The video showed that building a metro system involves far more than visible stations and tracks. Before passengers can use a new route, extensive underground excavation, planning, monitoring, and engineering coordination must be completed.

The latest milestone follows the official launch of tunnelling activities for the Dubai Metro Blue Line by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The RTA recently announced that the first stage of tunnelling operations has now been successfully completed.

The achievement represents a major step forward for the project and demonstrates Dubai’s continued focus on using innovative methods to deliver large-scale infrastructure developments.

The RTA also highlighted the evolution of tunnel construction in Dubai over the past two decades. The authority explained that its first tunnel boring machines were introduced in 2007, representing a significant advancement in the emirate’s engineering capabilities at the time.

During those early tunnelling operations, machines progressed at an average rate of approximately 12 metres per day, with the complete tunnelling process taking around seven months.

Today, Dubai’s capabilities have advanced significantly with the introduction of more powerful and technologically advanced equipment. The latest tunnel boring machine, named Al Wugeisha, represents a new generation of underground construction technology.

Equipped with advanced digital navigation, tracking, and monitoring systems, Al Wugeisha allows engineers to carry out excavation work with improved precision while maintaining high levels of safety and efficiency.

According to the RTA, the machine has achieved an impressive excavation rate of up to 30 metres per day under optimal conditions, allowing the first phase of tunnelling work to be completed within approximately two months.

The tunnel boring machine is among the largest pieces of engineering equipment used in the project. Measuring 163 metres in length and weighing more than 2,000 tonnes, it operates continuously to support construction progress.

Working around the clock, the machine carefully removes underground material while creating the tunnel structure required for the future metro route. Its typical daily progress ranges between 13 and 17 metres, depending on ground conditions and technical requirements.

The introduction of such advanced machinery demonstrates how construction methods have transformed in Dubai over a relatively short period. Improved technology has enabled faster project delivery while maintaining the accuracy required for complex underground transport systems.

The Blue Line is expected to become an important addition to Dubai’s public transport network, improving connectivity between several key areas of the city. Once completed, the route will support future urban growth and provide residents and visitors with another efficient transportation option.
