Dubai Gold Market Records Further Price Decline Ahead of Major Indian Festivals.

Gold prices in Dubai have slipped further as the Indian festive season approaches, with the latest decline coming ahead of major celebrations such as Navratri and Diwali, potentially offering buyers more favourable rates as demand for gold traditionally rises during this period.

Dubai Gold Prices Ease Further as Dollar Strength Weighs on Bullion

Dubai Gold Rates Slip Again as Stronger Dollar Puts Pressure on Precious Metal

Gold prices in Dubai moved lower again on Tuesday morning, with the precious metal continuing to face pressure from a firmer US dollar and rising US Treasury yields.

The latest decline came as Indian families and expatriates prepare for the upcoming festive period, including Navratri, Dhanteras and Diwali, when gold purchases traditionally increase.

At the opening of markets on Tuesday, the price of 24-karat gold stood at Dh496.75 per gram, compared with Dh498.50 per gram at Monday’s close.

The latest move represents another decline for the Dubai gold market, with the price of 24K bullion now down by approximately Dh37 per gram over the past month.

24K gold falls below Dh500

The 24K rate remained below the Dh500-per-gram level on Tuesday, potentially providing some relief to consumers who have been waiting for an opportunity to buy gold ahead of the Indian festive season.

Other commonly purchased gold categories also recorded declines.

The price of 22K gold fell to Dh460 per gram, while 21K was quoted at Dh441 per gram. The rate for 18K gold stood at Dh378 per gram.

In international markets, spot gold was trading around $4,122 an ounce, representing a decline of approximately 0.18 per cent.

The downward movement in Dubai has come amid broader weakness in the international gold market, where investors are assessing the impact of currency movements, interest rates and bond yields on the appeal of the precious metal.

Festive shoppers watch gold prices closely

The latest reduction comes at a significant time for Indian gold buyers.

Navratri, Dhanteras and Diwali are traditionally associated with increased demand for gold in India, with jewellery and bullion often purchased as part of festive celebrations and auspicious occasions.

For Indian expatriates living in the UAE and non-resident Indians, Dubai remains a popular market for purchasing gold.

The recent decline has therefore attracted attention among shoppers who have been monitoring prices ahead of the festive season.

With 24K gold falling below Dh500 per gram, some families may see the current market as an opportunity to bring forward purchases that they had originally planned to make later during the festive period.

The lower prices could be particularly relevant for consumers purchasing larger quantities, as even a relatively small change in the price per gram can make a noticeable difference to the overall cost of a gold purchase.

International market pressures remain

Despite gold’s long-term appeal as a store of value, the precious metal is currently facing several factors that are weighing on short-term sentiment.

A stronger US dollar has been one of the major pressures affecting gold prices.

Gold is generally traded internationally in US dollars, meaning a stronger dollar can make the metal more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

Higher US Treasury yields have also reduced the relative attractiveness of gold.

Unlike bonds and other interest-bearing assets, physical gold does not generate regular income. When yields rise, investors may become more inclined to hold assets that offer returns through interest.

This can increase the opportunity cost of holding gold and put additional pressure on prices.

Analyst sees continued short-term weakness

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, said the immediate outlook for gold remains challenging.

According to Weston, recent price action suggests that the market continues to face selling pressure, with rallies attracting sellers rather than establishing a sustained upward trend.

He pointed to the recent lows around $4,110 an ounce as an important level to watch.

A decisive move below that area, he said, could increase downward momentum and potentially take gold towards $4,100.

He also identified $4,000 as another important level, noting that the area previously attracted strong demand during June, July and August.

Weston described the current environment as one in which sellers continue to have the upper hand.

Gold needs stronger momentum to change outlook

For the short-term outlook to become more positive, Weston said gold would need to regain important levels on the upside.

He identified approximately $4,275 an ounce as a level that could change the near-term picture and make the outlook more constructive.

Until such a move occurs, he suggested that investors should remain cautious about expecting a sustained recovery.

The comments highlight the importance of key technical price levels at a time when broader economic factors are also influencing bullion.

Strong US dollar creates additional headwind

One of the main issues currently affecting gold is the strength of the US currency.

Weston noted that the US dollar index has remained above 102, close to multi-year highs.

A resilient dollar can weigh on commodities priced in the currency, including gold.

When the dollar strengthens, buyers using other currencies may face higher effective prices, potentially reducing demand.

The currency effect can therefore add another layer of pressure to the precious metal when gold is already facing headwinds from higher bond yields.

Treasury yields rise sharply

US Treasury yields have also moved higher, contributing to the pressure on gold.

Weston pointed to the US 10-year real yield, which had climbed to around 2.93 per cent.

He noted that real yields had increased sharply during August and September and were around cycle highs.

Real yields are closely watched by gold investors because they represent the return available from inflation-adjusted interest-bearing assets.

When real yields rise, holding a non-yielding asset such as gold can become comparatively less attractive.

This dynamic has become an important factor behind the recent weakness in the gold market.

Gold ETFs see limited inflows

Another factor highlighted by Weston was the lack of strong investment flows into gold-related exchange-traded funds.

He pointed to limited inflows into the GLD ETF and gold miners’ ETFs.

Weak or limited fund flows can indicate that investors are not aggressively increasing their exposure to gold at current price levels.

Combined with a strong dollar and elevated real yields, the subdued ETF activity adds to the challenges facing bullion in the short term.

Why yields matter for gold investors

Gold does not pay interest or dividends to investors holding the physical metal.

As a result, the attractiveness of owning gold can change depending on what investors can earn from other assets.

When real yields are low or negative, gold can become more attractive because the opportunity cost of holding it is relatively small.

However, when real yields rise significantly, investors may have greater incentive to allocate money towards interest-bearing assets.

That relationship is currently contributing to the pressure on bullion prices.

Dubai buyers benefit from lower rates

For consumers in Dubai, however, falling gold prices can provide a different perspective.

While investors may be concerned about the short-term direction of the international market, jewellery buyers often welcome lower prices.

The decline to Dh496.75 per gram for 24K gold puts the rate below the psychologically important Dh500 mark.

For shoppers preparing for Navratri, Dhanteras and Diwali, the timing could prove significant.

Many Indian families traditionally consider gold an important purchase during the festive period, whether for jewellery, gifts, investment or religious and cultural reasons.

A lower market price can make such purchases more affordable, although the final price of jewellery will also depend on factors such as craftsmanship, making charges and applicable taxes.

Festive demand could influence the market

The upcoming Indian festive season could provide additional support to physical gold demand.

Navratri is widely observed across India, followed by Dhanteras and Diwali, periods when gold buying traditionally increases.

Gold jewellery is often purchased for family occasions, celebrations and gifting, while some consumers also buy coins or bullion.

The UAE’s large Indian community means the festive period can have an impact on retail gold demand in Dubai as well.

If prices remain below recent highs, shoppers who had postponed purchases could decide to enter the market sooner.

This could create increased retail activity even while international investors remain cautious about the metal’s short-term direction.

Price movement remains closely watched

The Dubai market is heavily influenced by international bullion prices, meaning local rates can change as global markets move.

Currency conditions, interest rates, Treasury yields, investor sentiment and geopolitical developments can all influence the direction of gold.

For consumers, the daily retail price therefore remains an important consideration when deciding whether to purchase.

The latest decline is particularly notable because it follows a significant fall over the previous month.

With 24K gold now around Dh37 per gram lower than it was a month earlier, buyers who have been waiting for a correction may be paying closer attention to current rates.

What could happen next?

The immediate outlook remains uncertain.

From an investment perspective, the combination of a strong US dollar, elevated real yields and limited ETF inflows continues to create challenges for gold.

Weston’s assessment suggests that the metal could face additional selling pressure if it falls below the recent $4,110 level.

A move towards $4,100 or even $4,000 could then become possible if selling accelerates.

On the other hand, a recovery above $4,275 could improve the near-term outlook and indicate that buyers are regaining control.

For Dubai’s retail customers, the direction of international gold prices will remain important because changes in the global market are reflected in local bullion rates.

Festive shoppers face a key buying window

The current decline gives gold shoppers in Dubai another opportunity to assess prices before the main Indian festive celebrations begin.

With 24K gold below Dh500 per gram, buyers may find the current rate more attractive than the higher levels seen previously.

However, consumers should remember that the retail price of finished jewellery is not determined solely by the headline gold rate.

Making charges, design costs, taxes and other retail components can affect the final amount paid by customers.

Those purchasing gold as an investment may also consider factors beyond the immediate price movement, including their investment horizon and tolerance for market volatility.

Dubai remains a major gold shopping hub

Dubai has long been recognised as an important destination for gold shoppers, supported by its extensive jewellery retail network and large expatriate population.

The city’s gold market attracts residents, tourists and international visitors, particularly during major shopping and festive periods.

The Indian community represents an important segment of the market, especially around celebrations when gold buying becomes more prominent.

The latest price decline could therefore generate additional interest from consumers looking to make purchases before Navratri, Dhanteras and Diwali.

Whether prices continue to fall or begin recovering will depend largely on developments in international markets.

For now, the combination of a stronger dollar and higher US Treasury yields remains a significant challenge for bullion.

At the same time, the decline in Dubai’s retail gold rates offers consumers a potentially more favourable entry point compared with recent prices.

With festive demand approaching and international investors closely monitoring key price levels, both shoppers and market participants will be watching the next moves in gold closely.
