Saudi Ministry Reveals Preliminary Findings on Flydubai Pilot Assault.

Saudi authorities have released initial details from their investigation into the incident involving a Flydubai pilot, indicating that the early findings shed new light on the circumstances surrounding the reported assault and the events that took place during the flight.

Preliminary Saudi Probe Sheds Light on Flydubai Flight Diversion

An initial investigation into the incident that forced a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv to divert to Saudi Arabia has indicated that the aircraft’s captain was assaulted by the co-pilot, according to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior.

The incident occurred aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 on September 30, when the Boeing 737 MAX 8 was travelling from Dubai towards Israel. The aircraft was subsequently diverted and landed safely at an airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

According to the Saudi ministry, preliminary inquiries carried out by the relevant authorities, in coordination with a security team from the United Arab Emirates, found that an altercation took place between the two pilots.

The initial findings indicated that the co-pilot assaulted the captain during the incident, with both pilots sustaining injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE are examining the circumstances surrounding the altercation, including the events that led to the diversion and the possible motives involved.

Flight diverted to Saudi Arabia

Flydubai flight FZ1073 departed Dubai on Wednesday, September 30, bound for Tel Aviv.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members when the incident occurred.

Following the altercation on board, the flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia. The aircraft received permission to make an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior said the plane landed safely at approximately 9:45am local time.

After the aircraft arrived, passengers and crew members were provided with the necessary logistical and medical assistance.

The two pilots were taken to a local hospital for medical assessment and treatment following the incident.

Passengers continue their journey

The disruption to the flight did not result in passengers remaining stranded in Saudi Arabia for an extended period.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior, the passengers resumed their journey later the same day using another Flydubai aircraft.

The replacement aircraft departed at approximately 5:40pm, allowing the passengers to continue their travel plans.

The original flight crew, meanwhile, returned to Dubai on a separate flight operated by Flydubai.

The captain and co-pilot remained under medical supervision in Saudi Arabia while their condition was assessed.

Following medical clearance, both pilots eventually left Saudi Arabia for Abu Dhabi on Thursday, October 1.

They were accompanied by a security team from the UAE during their journey.

Indian pilot recovering in the UAE

The captain involved in the incident is Indian pilot Smit Machchhar.

The Indian Embassy in the UAE previously confirmed that Machchhar was receiving treatment in the country and described his condition as good.

Indian Ambassador to the UAE Deepak Mittal visited Machchhar at the hospital and also met members of his family.

Following the visit, Mittal said the captain was in stable condition and appeared to be maintaining a positive outlook during his recovery.

The ambassador said Machchhar was able to communicate openly and was smiling and laughing during their interaction, which provided reassurance to officials and, particularly, to his family.

The Indian government has continued to monitor the pilot’s condition through its diplomatic representatives.

Indian officials have also maintained communication with authorities in the UAE regarding the investigation and the pilot’s wellbeing.

Investigation begins in the UAE

While Saudi authorities conducted the initial investigation into the incident after the aircraft landed in Tabuk, UAE authorities have launched their own inquiry.

The UAE Attorney-General said investigators are examining whether the incident may have been connected to terrorist activity or purpose, or whether it involved any form of prior planning or direction.

The authorities have established a dedicated investigation team through the Public Prosecution to examine the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

Counsellor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered the formation of the special team and instructed investigators to begin gathering relevant information and evidence.

The team is working in coordination with the General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant UAE agencies.

Investigators have been directed to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine the circumstances in which the confrontation occurred.

They will also examine the possible motives behind the incident.

UAE authorities assert jurisdiction

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained why the country’s judicial authorities are handling the investigation despite the incident taking place while the aircraft was outside UAE territory.

According to the ministry, the aircraft is registered in the UAE and operates under the Emirati flag.

Under UAE legislation, the ministry said, the country’s laws apply to offences committed aboard an aircraft registered in the UAE, including incidents that occur outside the country’s territorial boundaries.

This legal framework gives UAE judicial authorities jurisdiction to investigate the incident involving flight FZ1073.

The investigation is therefore being handled in coordination with aviation and security authorities as officials work to establish a complete account of what happened aboard the aircraft.

Saudi authorities coordinate with UAE team

The Saudi Ministry of Interior said its preliminary investigation was carried out with the involvement of a security team from the UAE.

The cooperation reflects the international nature of the incident.

The aircraft departed from Dubai, was travelling towards Israel and eventually landed in Saudi Arabia.

The two pilots were subsequently transferred to Abu Dhabi after receiving medical clearance.

The involvement of authorities from both countries is therefore central to efforts to establish what happened during the flight.

Saudi authorities were responsible for responding to the emergency landing and providing medical and logistical support to those aboard the aircraft.

UAE authorities, meanwhile, are examining the incident under the country’s legal framework governing aircraft registered in the UAE.

Details of the altercation

The Saudi Ministry of Interior said preliminary findings indicated that an altercation took place between the captain and co-pilot.

The initial investigation concluded that the co-pilot assaulted the captain, with both individuals sustaining injuries.

Authorities have not yet released a complete account of what triggered the confrontation or provided a detailed explanation of what occurred inside the cockpit.

Those questions form part of the wider investigation now being conducted.

The UAE Public Prosecution team has been tasked with collecting evidence, determining the sequence of events and establishing the circumstances and motives associated with the incident.

Until the investigation is completed, the preliminary findings should be regarded as an early account rather than a final determination.

Emergency response in Tabuk

The decision to divert the aircraft to Saudi Arabia allowed the pilots and other passengers to receive assistance after the incident.

The aircraft landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport at 9:45am local time.

The Saudi authorities said all 174 passengers and eight crew members received the necessary logistical and medical support following the landing.

The two pilots were taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Passengers were subsequently moved to a replacement Flydubai aircraft and continued their journey later in the day.

The original crew returned to Dubai separately, while the two pilots remained in Saudi Arabia until they received medical clearance to travel.

Pilot’s condition reassures family

Machchhar’s medical condition has been an important concern since the incident.

The Indian Embassy in the UAE said he was in good health and recovering well after being transferred to the UAE for continued treatment.

Ambassador Mittal’s visit to the hospital provided an opportunity for Indian officials to assess his condition directly.

The ambassador also met Machchhar’s wife, brother and other family members and assured them that the Indian government would provide support.

Mittal said the captain’s positive interaction during the hospital visit was reassuring.

The Indian diplomatic mission has continued to remain in contact with relevant UAE officials while following the pilot’s recovery.

Broader security questions being examined

The incident has prompted authorities to examine more than the physical confrontation between the two pilots.

The UAE Attorney-General has specifically said investigators are looking into whether the incident was connected to terrorist activity or a terrorist purpose.

Authorities are also examining whether there was any prior planning or direction associated with the incident.

These questions are part of the investigation being handled by the special Public Prosecution team.

The team has been instructed to collect evidence and establish the facts before determining the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

No final conclusions regarding the motive or wider security implications of the incident have been announced.

Aviation authorities involved

The investigation also involves the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority.

Its involvement reflects the aviation-related nature of the incident and the need to examine the circumstances surrounding the operation of the aircraft.

The Public Prosecution team is coordinating with the authority and other relevant government bodies as part of the investigation.

Such coordination is intended to help investigators establish a complete picture of what happened during the flight and understand the sequence of events that resulted in the diversion.

The investigation will also need to take account of the aircraft’s movements, the emergency landing, the treatment of the pilots and the subsequent transfer of the crew.

International flight with multiple jurisdictions involved

The incident involved several countries and jurisdictions from the moment the flight departed Dubai.

Flydubai flight FZ1073 began its journey in the UAE and was headed towards Tel Aviv.

Following the incident aboard the aircraft, it entered Saudi Arabian airspace and was diverted to Tabuk.

Saudi authorities then provided emergency assistance, medical care and logistical support to passengers and crew.

The injured pilots later travelled to Abu Dhabi following medical clearance.

Because the aircraft is UAE-registered and operates under the Emirati flag, UAE authorities have said that their laws apply to offences committed aboard the plane even when it is outside UAE territory.

This has resulted in cooperation between Saudi and UAE authorities during the investigation.

Passenger journey resumes after disruption

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the passengers were able to continue their journey on the same day.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior said a replacement Flydubai aircraft was arranged, with passengers departing at around 5:40pm.

This allowed the travellers to resume their journey after receiving the required assistance at the Saudi airport.

The flight crew, apart from the two pilots who required medical evaluation, returned to Dubai on another Flydubai service.

The handling of the passengers following the diversion formed part of the logistical response undertaken by Saudi authorities.

Pilots receive medical treatment

Both the captain and co-pilot were taken to a local hospital following the emergency landing.

Their injuries were assessed and treated by medical professionals in Saudi Arabia.

The pilots remained there until they were cleared to travel.

On Thursday, October 1, they left Saudi Arabia and travelled to Abu Dhabi accompanied by a UAE security team.

Machchhar subsequently continued his recovery in the UAE.

The Indian Embassy has provided updates about his condition, describing him as being in good health and recovering well.

Authorities continue gathering evidence

The investigation remains active, with officials working to establish the complete circumstances of the incident.

The special Public Prosecution team in the UAE has been directed to take the necessary steps to collect evidence and information.

Investigators are expected to examine the available material to determine how the altercation began, what happened during the confrontation and why the aircraft was diverted.

They are also examining whether there was any advance planning or direction connected to the incident.

The UAE Attorney-General’s statement indicates that authorities are considering both the immediate altercation and possible wider security implications.

No final findings announced

Although the Saudi authorities have released preliminary findings pointing to an assault by the co-pilot against the captain, the investigation has not yet reached its final stage.

The initial findings provide an early account of the confrontation but do not necessarily answer all questions surrounding the incident.

The UAE investigation is continuing, and officials have indicated that evidence and information will be gathered before the circumstances and motives are established.

Further details could therefore emerge as investigators complete their work.

Focus remains on the pilot’s recovery

For Machchhar’s family and Indian authorities, his medical recovery remains a major priority.

The Indian Embassy’s latest update that he is in good health and recovering well has provided reassurance following the incident.

Ambassador Mittal’s hospital visit also allowed the Indian government to communicate directly with the pilot and his family.

Meanwhile, UAE authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the confrontation.

What happened to flight FZ1073?

The known sequence of events begins with Flydubai flight FZ1073 departing Dubai for Tel Aviv on September 30.

The aircraft was carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members.

An altercation involving the two pilots took place during the flight.

According to preliminary findings released by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior, the co-pilot assaulted the captain, and both pilots were injured.

The aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia and received permission to make an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

It arrived safely at 9:45am.

Later that afternoon, at approximately 5:40pm, passengers boarded a replacement Flydubai aircraft and continued their journey.

The original crew returned to Dubai separately.

The two pilots were taken to hospital and later, after receiving medical clearance, travelled to Abu Dhabi accompanied by a UAE security team.

Investigation continues in two countries

The incident is now being examined through cooperation between authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Saudi officials carried out preliminary inquiries after the emergency landing, while a UAE security team participated in the process.

UAE judicial authorities are conducting a separate and broader investigation under the country’s legal framework.

The Public Prosecution has formed a dedicated team to establish the facts and examine the circumstances and motives surrounding the altercation.

The General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant agencies are working with investigators.

The UAE Foreign Ministry has also confirmed that the country’s laws apply to offences committed aboard UAE-registered aircraft even when the aircraft is outside UAE territory.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities are expected to assess all available evidence before reaching final conclusions.

For now, the preliminary Saudi finding identifies an assault by the co-pilot as the immediate cause of the injuries to the captain, while the wider circumstances and possible motive remain under investigation.
