Spain mourns after 13-year-old dies in fountain collapse during World Cup event

The incident took place just after midnight in Ciudad Rodrigo, a historic walled medieval town in Salamanca province with a population of around 12,000, located close to the Portuguese border.

A 13-year-old child lost their life and two others were injured after a fountain partially collapsed in western Spain during the early hours of Monday morning, emergency officials reported. The tragic incident occurred as crowds gathered to celebrate Spain’s second-ever football World Cup triumph, turning what was meant to be a moment of national joy into a devastating accident.

The collapse happened shortly after midnight in Ciudad Rodrigo, a historic medieval city located in Salamanca province, close to Spain’s border with Portugal. The town, known for its ancient walls and heritage sites, has a population of approximately 12,000 people.

According to regional emergency services, a large number of residents had gathered around the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city centre to join the celebrations following the national team’s World Cup victory. During the gathering, part of the fountain’s upper structure suddenly broke away and fell onto people standing nearby.

Emergency responders were quickly called to the scene, where they found several people affected by the collapse. Despite efforts to save the 13-year-old victim, the child died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Two other individuals were also hurt and received medical attention following the incident.

The unexpected collapse shocked the local community, with residents expressing sadness over the loss of a young life during an event that was intended to bring people together. Authorities began assessing the circumstances surrounding the failure of the structure while emergency teams continued to support those affected by the tragedy.

Ciudad Rodrigo’s municipal government issued a statement offering condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Officials said the entire city was mourning the loss and standing alongside those grieving after the heartbreaking incident.

The town hall described the accident as a painful moment for the community, noting that celebrations for Spain’s historic football achievement had been overshadowed by an unforeseen tragedy. The statement highlighted the contrast between the excitement of the World Cup celebrations and the sorrow caused by the fatal accident.

Residents who had gathered for the festivities were left deeply affected by the incident, as a night that began with celebrations quickly became a scene of grief. The accident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures during large public gatherings, especially when crowds gather around public structures and monuments.

Authorities are expected to investigate the condition of the fountain and determine what caused the upper section of the monument to collapse. The findings will help establish whether structural issues or other factors contributed to the accident.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over Spain’s World Cup celebrations, with the local community of Ciudad Rodrigo mourning the young victim and supporting those injured. What was planned as a memorable celebration of sporting success has instead become a day marked by loss and reflection for the city.
