UAE Diplomat Praises Flydubai Pilot Following Mid-Air Security Incident

UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash has praised Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar for what he described as an act of courage and responsibility during a serious incident aboard a flight on September 30.

Machchhar, an Indian national, has received widespread recognition for his actions during the mid-flight altercation involving Flydubai flight FZ1073. The aircraft was travelling towards Israel when the incident occurred, eventually diverting to Saudi Arabia.

Gargash, who serves as diplomatic adviser to the President of the UAE, said the pilot deserved recognition for the way he responded to the situation.

In a post on Friday, Gargash said Machchhar demonstrated courage and a strong sense of responsibility while confronting what he described as a dangerous terrorist act and a situation that could potentially have resulted in a major disaster.

He also praised the pilot’s professionalism and judgment under extremely difficult circumstances, describing his conduct as an example of courage.

At the same time, Gargash urged the public to avoid drawing overly simple conclusions about the incident before the investigation has established the facts.

He warned against speculation and the spread of conspiracy theories, stressing the importance of remaining vigilant when dealing with the risks associated with extremism and terrorism.

His comments came as authorities in the UAE continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigation continues

The UAE Attorney-General said on Thursday that investigators were examining whether the incident had any connection to terrorist activity or a terrorist purpose, and whether it involved advance planning or external direction.

Counsellor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered the establishment of a special team within the Public Prosecution to investigate the incident.

The team has been tasked with collecting evidence, establishing what happened and examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are also expected to determine the motives, if any, behind the actions that led to the security situation aboard the aircraft.

Authorities have not publicly reached a final conclusion about the nature or motivation of the incident.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority previously described what happened as a security incident.

The aviation authority said its investigation would examine both operational and security-related aspects of the case.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also said it is monitoring developments surrounding the incident.

The ongoing investigation is therefore expected to provide further information about what happened on board the aircraft and the events that led to the flight being diverted.

Pilot injured during altercation

Machchhar was injured during the incident but continued to act in an effort to protect those on board the aircraft.

During a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, the pilot described what happened and explained how he was able to open the cockpit door despite having sustained injuries.

According to the account shared during the conversation, opening the cockpit door allowed passengers and members of the cabin crew to become involved and helped them respond to the situation.

Machchhar told Modi that he had been fighting for his life during the incident.

At the same time, he said he was conscious of his responsibility for everyone travelling on the aircraft and did not want the situation to result in loss of life.

The account has contributed to the praise directed towards the pilot following the incident.

Modi subsequently described Machchhar as a hero and said people across India were praying for his recovery.

Pilot recovering in UAE

Machchhar was subsequently taken to the UAE for medical treatment.

According to India’s ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, the pilot’s condition is stable and he is recovering.

Mittal visited Machchhar and his family at the hospital while the pilot continued receiving medical care.

The ambassador’s comments provided an update on Machchhar’s condition following the injuries he suffered during the incident.

The pilot’s recovery has also become an important part of the public response to the episode, with officials and members of the public expressing support for him.

Recognition from Indian and UAE officials

The incident has attracted attention in both India and the UAE because of the pilot’s reported actions during the emergency.

Gargash’s comments added to the expressions of appreciation from officials who have highlighted Machchhar’s conduct during the incident.

Modi also spoke directly with the pilot and praised his actions.

The Indian Prime Minister said Machchhar had shown bravery during an extremely difficult situation and expressed his wishes for the captain’s recovery.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also previously praised the pilot, describing his actions as extraordinarily brave.

Netanyahu said Machchhar had fought back despite being injured and credited him with helping prevent what he characterised as a potentially catastrophic incident in the air.

Authorities urge caution while facts are established

While the pilot has received considerable praise, the UAE authorities have continued to emphasise that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Gargash’s warning against simplifying the episode or circulating conspiracy theories reflects the need to distinguish confirmed information from speculation while investigators examine the evidence.

The Attorney-General’s office is investigating a number of questions, including whether the incident had any connection to terrorism, whether there was a specific purpose behind the actions involved and whether anyone had planned or directed the events in advance.

Until those questions are answered, authorities have not announced a final determination regarding the motive or wider circumstances.

The aviation authorities are also examining the operational side of the incident, alongside security considerations.

This means investigators are looking at more than the actions of individuals during the confrontation. They are also examining how the flight was operated, how the security situation developed and what procedures were followed during the emergency.

Flight diverted after incident

Flight FZ1073 was travelling towards Israel when the altercation occurred.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Saudi Arabia.

The diversion formed part of the response to the situation that developed during the flight and allowed the aircraft and those on board to be brought to a location where the incident could be dealt with.

The circumstances of the diversion and the sequence of events leading up to it form part of the wider investigation.

Details released publicly so far have focused largely on the actions of the pilot, his injuries and the response of passengers and cabin crew.

Further findings from investigators could provide a more complete account of what happened.

Pilot’s actions draw international attention

Machchhar’s conduct has attracted attention beyond the UAE and India.

The pilot has been publicly recognised by senior officials, with his actions being described in terms of bravery and professional responsibility.

The praise has focused particularly on his decision to continue responding to the emergency despite being injured.

His reported decision to open the cockpit door has also been highlighted because it allowed passengers and crew members to assist during the incident.

The account provided by Machchhar himself offers an indication of the pressure he was under.

Speaking with Modi, he said he was fighting for his own life but remained conscious that his actions could affect everyone else aboard the aircraft.

His comments have been cited by officials as evidence of the responsibility he felt towards the passengers and crew.

Recovery remains the immediate priority

As the investigation continues, Machchhar remains in the UAE recovering from his injuries.

India’s ambassador said the pilot was in stable condition after being brought to the UAE for treatment.

The visit by Mittal to the hospital was also intended to provide support to Machchhar and his family during his recovery.

For now, attention remains divided between the pilot’s medical condition and the investigation into the events that took place aboard the flight.

Officials have continued to recognise the pilot’s actions while stressing that the wider circumstances must be established through the investigation.

Questions surrounding the incident remain

Several important questions remain subject to investigation.

Among them is whether the incident was an isolated event or whether it was connected to a wider plan.

Authorities are also examining whether there was any terrorist purpose, whether the actions were planned beforehand and whether anyone else was involved in directing the incident.

The UAE Attorney-General’s investigation team has been instructed to collect evidence and establish the facts before drawing conclusions.

The General Civil Aviation Authority is separately examining the operational and security aspects.

The results of those investigations are expected to provide a clearer picture of the events and their causes.

Until then, officials have urged caution in interpreting reports and claims surrounding the incident.

Gargash stresses vigilance

Gargash’s comments combined praise for the pilot with a warning about the dangers of speculation.

While recognising Machchhar’s courage, he said vigilance and caution remained important when confronting threats associated with extremism and terrorism.

His comments came at a time when public discussion of the incident was growing, with different accounts and interpretations circulating.

By calling for caution, Gargash emphasised the importance of allowing investigators to establish the facts rather than relying on unverified explanations.

The UAE authorities have similarly continued to describe the investigation as ongoing.

Broader focus on aviation security

The incident has also drawn attention to the importance of aviation security and the responsibilities of flight crews during emergencies.

Commercial pilots are responsible not only for operating an aircraft but also for responding to unexpected situations that may threaten passengers, crew members or the safety of the flight.

In this case, the actions attributed to Machchhar have been highlighted by officials in India, the UAE and Israel.

His reported response while injured has become a central part of the public account of the incident.

However, the authorities’ continuing investigation means that the full circumstances have yet to be established.

Officials continue to monitor developments

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it is monitoring the situation, while the country’s aviation authorities and Public Prosecution continue their respective investigations.

The involvement of multiple government bodies reflects the security and aviation implications of the incident.

The Public Prosecution is examining the circumstances and possible motives, while the aviation authority is looking at operational and security issues.

The investigation could therefore cover a range of evidence, including accounts from people on board, operational information and other material gathered by authorities.

Officials have not indicated when the investigation will be completed.

A developing investigation

For now, Machchhar’s recovery and the official investigation remain the two main developments following the September 30 incident.

The pilot is reported to be stable in the UAE and continuing his recovery.

At the same time, investigators are working to establish exactly what happened aboard FZ1073, why the confrontation occurred and whether it was connected to any wider activity.

Gargash’s remarks have added to the public recognition of Machchhar while also underlining the importance of waiting for verified findings.

The comments from the UAE diplomat, together with statements from Indian and Israeli leaders, have placed the pilot’s actions at the centre of the public response.

However, the authorities’ investigation remains ongoing, and questions concerning the incident’s circumstances, planning and possible motives have not yet been conclusively answered.

For the time being, officials are continuing to emphasise two parallel messages: recognition for those who responded during the emergency and caution against speculation until investigators have established the full facts.
