UAE-based nurse springs into action after passenger collapses on her second-ever airplane trip.

A nurse working in the UAE quickly responded to a medical emergency onboard when a traveler suddenly collapsed, despite it being only the second time she had ever traveled by air.

A routine Air India Express journey from Dubai to Tiruchirappalli turned tense shortly after departure when a passenger suddenly lost consciousness mid-flight. Around 20 minutes after takeoff on May 12, concern spread rapidly among travelers as the 32-year-old man became unresponsive, leaving fellow passengers alarmed and unsure of what to do.

At that critical moment, Akilaoviyan Neelakandan, a nurse employed at RAK Hospital in the UAE, immediately stepped forward to assist. Seated toward the rear of the aircraft, she reacted quickly after the cabin crew urgently requested medical help onboard. Despite having very limited emergency equipment available during the flight, she began assessing the passenger’s condition and worked calmly to provide immediate care.

Neelakandan monitored the man closely throughout the journey, using the basic medical resources available inside the aircraft to keep him stable. Her swift response helped reassure both passengers and crew members during the stressful situation. For nearly two hours, she continued checking the passenger’s condition while coordinating with the airline staff until the aircraft safely arrived in India.

What made the incident even more remarkable was the fact that the nurse was not an experienced traveler herself. She was travelling to India for her first vacation in a long time and was only experiencing her second flight ever. Instead of panicking during the emergency, she relied on her professional training and remained focused on helping the passenger recover.

Witnesses onboard described scenes of confusion in the cabin when the medical emergency first unfolded, with several passengers standing up anxiously as the crew attempted to manage the situation. However, Neelakandan’s presence and quick intervention helped bring the situation under control. Her actions highlighted the importance of trained medical professionals during emergencies, even in challenging environments such as an aircraft with limited medical facilities.

By the time the plane landed, the passenger had been stabilised, thanks largely to the nurse’s continuous attention and dedication throughout the flight. Her calm handling of the incident earned appreciation from fellow passengers and airline staff alike, turning what could have been a tragic situation into a story of courage, professionalism, and timely action high above the clouds.

Akilaoviyan Neelakandan was seated near the rear section of the Air India Express aircraft when an urgent announcement echoed through the cabin asking whether any doctors or medical professionals were onboard. Without hesitation, the UAE-based nurse quickly got up from her seat and rushed toward the passenger in distress.

Recalling the frightening moments, she explained that the man appeared completely unresponsive when she first approached him. Although he was still breathing, he showed no reaction when spoken to, causing concern among nearby travelers and crew members. Within moments, the atmosphere inside the cabin became tense as passengers began standing up anxiously, trying to understand what had happened.

According to Neelakandan, the situation became more serious when the passenger started displaying seizure-like symptoms. His body reportedly shook continuously, and he experienced repeated jerking movements that alarmed everyone around him. Despite the panic spreading through the aircraft, the nurse said she remained calm and focused entirely on providing emergency care.

She explained that years of hospital experience helped her react instinctively. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the situation unfolding thousands of feet above the ground, she approached the emergency the same way she would inside a medical facility. Her first priority was to reposition the passenger properly and begin immediate basic emergency response procedures to ensure his breathing remained stable.

A doctor who was also travelling onboard soon joined her in assisting the patient. Working together, they decided to move the passenger toward a more open area near the front section of the plane where they could treat him more effectively. The narrow cabin space and crowd of worried passengers made the task difficult, but the two medical professionals managed to create enough room to continue treatment.

Neelakandan later described the challenges they faced during the incident, saying the aircraft carried only limited medical equipment and supplies. Unlike a hospital environment with advanced monitoring devices and emergency resources, the team had to rely mainly on basic onboard medical kits while making quick decisions under pressure.

Following the doctor’s guidance, the nurse inserted an intravenous line into the passenger’s vein so fluids and supportive treatment could be administered. Throughout the flight, she continuously checked his pulse rate, blood pressure, and overall condition to make sure his health did not deteriorate further. She noted that his pulse appeared unusually low while his blood pressure readings were elevated, which increased concern about his condition.

The passenger also suffered from intense shivering during much of the ordeal. To help him feel warmer and more comfortable, the nurse and crew members covered him with a bedsheet. Neelakandan said they gently rubbed his hands and legs in an effort to improve circulation and reduce the severe chills he was experiencing.

Based on the symptoms she observed, the nurse suspected that the man could have been suffering from low blood sugar combined with seizure-related complications. However, because the aircraft lacked a glucose monitoring device, the medical team could not immediately confirm his sugar levels. Even so, they continued treatment using electrolyte support and intravenous fluids in hopes of stabilising him.

For nearly two hours, Neelakandan stayed by the passenger’s side, carefully observing every change in his condition while reassuring the worried cabin crew and nearby travelers. Slowly, the man began responding to treatment and gradually regained consciousness. Once he became more alert and was able to communicate, the nurse carefully provided him with juice to help restore his energy levels while continuing to monitor him closely.

Even after the situation improved, she remained attentive throughout the rest of the flight. After briefly returning to her own seat, she later walked back to check on the passenger again to ensure he remained stable. During that interaction, she gently asked how he was feeling and whether he needed any additional help. According to Neelakandan, the man thanked her and reassured her that he was feeling much better.

The passenger had reportedly been travelling alone, which added to the seriousness of the incident. By the time the aircraft approached India, airline authorities had already informed airport emergency teams about the medical situation onboard. Upon landing, medical personnel were waiting to immediately transfer the passenger for further evaluation and treatment.

The incident turned what was supposed to be a routine journey into a life-saving mission high above the clouds. Neelakandan’s calm response, professional training, and determination during a stressful in-flight emergency earned praise from fellow passengers and airline staff alike. Despite it being only her second experience flying on an airplane, the nurse handled the crisis with confidence and composure, helping ensure the passenger received critical care until the flight landed safely.

Following the aircraft’s safe arrival, the Air India Express cabin crew expressed their gratitude to the nurse for her timely assistance during the onboard emergency. As a gesture of appreciation, they presented her with a handwritten thank-you note acknowledging her quick response, professionalism, and dedicated efforts in helping the passenger who had fallen seriously ill during the flight. The crew praised her calm handling of the situation, which helped ensure the traveler received immediate medical attention when it was needed most.
