Weather authorities warn that parts of the UAE may see rain on New Year’s Eve, accompanied by strong winds and rough sea conditions, prompting residents and visitors to stay cautious and plan outdoor activities carefully.
UAE New Year’s Eve forecast: Rain chances in some areas as strong winds and rough seas expected

The UAE is set to experience unsettled weather conditions on New Year’s Eve, with cloud cover, lower temperatures, strong winds and regional variations, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).
Forecasts indicate that much of the country will remain partly cloudy through Wednesday, accompanied by a noticeable drop in temperatures compared to recent weeks. While snowfall is not expected, winter conditions are already making themselves felt. Early on Wednesday morning, temperatures fell to as low as 3.5°C at Jais Mountain in Ras Al Khaimah, marking one of the coldest readings of the season.
Along the coast, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, daytime temperatures are expected to range between 21°C and 24°C. Inland and northern parts of the UAE are likely to see highs close to 20°C, with nighttime temperatures falling to between 10°C and 12°C. Mountainous areas, particularly Jebel Jais, will be significantly colder. Rising humidity levels during the evening may also lead to fog or mist forming in some areas during the early hours of January 1.
Windy conditions expected
Northwesterly winds will be active across the country and could strengthen at times, lifting dust and sand into the air. These conditions may reduce visibility, particularly across northern and eastern inland regions. In exposed locations, wind speeds could reach between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour.
Chances of rainfall
Widespread rain is not anticipated on New Year’s Eve, though light and isolated showers remain possible in northern and eastern areas, as well as over offshore islands, due to the presence of low-level clouds. Parts of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah have already recorded light rainfall, making them the most likely areas to experience brief showers later today or overnight. Any rainfall is expected to be limited and short-lived.
Abu Dhabi and western regions
Weather conditions in Abu Dhabi and surrounding western areas will generally be fair to partly cloudy, with moderate winds. Temperatures will remain cooler than average for this time of year, and blowing dust may affect visibility on highways and open desert roads.
Dubai and Sharjah outlook
Dubai and Sharjah are expected to enjoy mostly clear to partly cloudy skies during the day, with cooler conditions setting in after sunset. While coastal areas are forecast to remain dry, low clouds could bring isolated light showers near northern parts of the emirates. Gusty winds may impact beach areas and outdoor New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Northern emirates and east coast
Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are likely to see increased cloud cover, along with a higher chance of light, patchy rain — particularly in Ras Al Khaimah and nearby highland areas. Strong winds and rough sea conditions could pose risks along the coast.
Inland and mountainous areas
The coldest temperatures are expected in inland desert regions and mountainous zones, where nighttime readings may drop to around 10°C to 12°C as winter conditions intensify. Elevated humidity could also result in fog or mist forming in valleys and wadis after midnight.
Sea conditions remain rough
Those planning marine activities are advised to exercise caution. The Arabian Gulf is forecast to experience rough to very rough seas, while the Oman Sea is expected to be rough to moderate through New Year’s Eve due to persistent winds. Beachgoers and boat operators should stay updated on weather advisories.
Overall, while heavy rainfall is unlikely, the combination of cooler temperatures, strong winds and occasional local showers means residents and visitors heading outdoors or travelling on New Year’s Eve should remain cautious and plan accordingly.
With large crowds expected at outdoor celebrations, authorities have advised residents and visitors to stay informed about changing weather conditions. Strong winds could affect temporary structures, outdoor stages and fireworks displays, prompting organisers to take precautionary measures. Cooler temperatures may also come as a surprise to those planning extended outdoor stays, especially late at night. People attending celebrations are encouraged to dress warmly, secure loose items and allow extra travel time. Event organisers are expected to closely monitor weather updates to ensure public safety throughout the evening.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution while travelling on New Year’s Eve, particularly in areas affected by dust, fog or reduced visibility. Strong winds may cause drifting sand on highways, especially in desert stretches and open inland roads. Early morning fog on January 1 could further impact visibility in low-lying areas. Authorities recommend reducing speed, maintaining safe distances between vehicles and using fog lights when necessary. Travellers heading to mountainous regions should be especially careful, as colder temperatures and gusty winds could create challenging driving conditions.
Looking ahead, weather officials say the cooler trend is expected to continue into the first days of January, with fluctuating cloud cover and moderate winds across the UAE. While no major weather systems are currently forecast, conditions may remain unstable at times, particularly over northern and eastern regions. Sea conditions are also expected to improve gradually once winds ease. Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from the National Centre of Meteorology, especially those planning travel, marine activities or outdoor events during the New Year period.
