Since the service began on September 30, early passengers have been testing the route and comparing the cost, convenience and travel time with their usual taxis, buses and private cars.

For people who regularly cross the emirates for work, the new rail connection could significantly change the way they plan their daily journeys. While some passengers are attracted by lower travel expenses, others are more interested in avoiding long hours behind the wheel and the unpredictability of traffic.

The new service connects Dubai’s Al Yalayis Station with Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi. The journey takes approximately 64 minutes, providing commuters with a fixed travel time that can be difficult to achieve when travelling by road during busy periods.

Among the early passengers was robotics engineer Wasif, an Abu Dhabi-based professional who previously depended on taxis for his journey to work. His regular travel costs made the new rail service particularly attractive.

Wasif said his taxi expense could exceed Dh350 for a single trip. On Wednesday, however, he chose to try the newly launched train service, boarding the Etihad Rail train from Dubai at 7.14am.

His journey began with a taxi ride from Al Nahda to the railway station. That first part of the trip cost him Dh134. He then purchased a Comfort Class train ticket for Dh39.

Together, the taxi and train journey cost him Dh173, considerably less than the more than Dh350 he previously paid for a single taxi trip.

That meant an immediate saving of at least Dh177 on the journey, although the final cost of his trip could also depend on how he travels after reaching his destination.

Passengers arriving at their destination station can use several onward transportation options, including shuttle buses, taxis and car rentals. Some of these options are available from around Dh10, giving commuters additional flexibility when completing the final part of their journey.

For Wasif, however, the benefit was not limited to the reduction in his travel bill. He also found the rail journey more comfortable and convenient than making the entire trip by road.

After experiencing the service, he said he was likely to make the train his regular choice for his weekly commute.

His experience illustrates one of the key reasons the new passenger service is attracting attention among UAE residents: travellers do not necessarily have to choose between affordability and convenience. By combining a short taxi journey with the train, some commuters may be able to reduce their overall transportation expenses while also avoiding the stress associated with driving long distances.

A new option for daily inter-emirate travel

Wasif was among the first group of passengers to experience the Dubai-Abu Dhabi passenger connection after its launch.

The service currently provides five direct departures from Dubai each day. Trains leave at 6.14am, 7.14am, 1.14pm, 5.14pm and 6.14pm.

Passengers travelling in the opposite direction can use five return services departing Abu Dhabi at 6.43am, 7.43am, 12.43pm, 4.43pm and 5.43pm.

The schedule gives commuters several options throughout the day, including early-morning departures designed to accommodate people travelling to work.

Comfort Class fares begin at Dh39, while Premium Class tickets start at Dh109.

For regular travellers, the difference between the train fare and the cost of travelling entirely by taxi or private vehicle could become particularly noticeable over the course of a month. The actual savings, however, will depend on where passengers live, how they reach the stations and how they complete the final part of their journey.

Even when additional transportation is required, the rail service may still provide an alternative to making the entire trip by car or taxi.

For some passengers, time matters more than money

Not every early passenger was primarily interested in saving money.

For Indian expatriate Abhishek, the biggest potential advantage of the train was the amount of time it could save during his regular journey between Abu Dhabi and his home in Mirdiff.

Abhishek normally drives between the two locations every day. According to him, the trip to Abu Dhabi takes around one and a half hours, while the return journey can take approximately two and a half hours because of heavy traffic, particularly in the direction of Sharjah.

Rather than spending several hours behind the wheel, he decided to test the early-morning train service.

He travelled on the 6.14am departure and said the journey to the station had been straightforward. His decision about whether to use the train regularly would depend partly on how easily he could reach his workplace after getting off the train.

For Abhishek, the possibility of eliminating a large portion of his driving time was enough to make the service worth considering.

If the final connection from the railway station to his office proves equally convenient, he said he could consider using the train on a daily basis.

His experience highlights another potential advantage of rail travel: predictable journey times.

Road travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi can vary considerably depending on traffic, weather, road conditions and congestion. A journey that takes a certain amount of time during quieter periods can become significantly longer during the morning and evening rush.

The Etihad Rail journey, by comparison, follows a fixed schedule and takes about one hour and four minutes.

For commuters who need to arrive at work at a specific time, that predictability could be just as valuable as any financial saving.

Traffic remains a major factor for road commuters

Long-distance commuting between the emirates has become a familiar part of life for many residents. Thousands of people live in one emirate while working in another, making daily transportation an important consideration.

For motorists, the journey is not always consistent.

Congestion can add significant time to a trip, particularly during peak periods. Recent roadworks in Sharjah’s Taawun area have also contributed to delays for some motorists travelling through the area.

For people making the journey in both directions every day, even an additional 30 or 60 minutes on the road can add up quickly over the course of a working week.

The rail service offers a different experience. Once passengers are on board, the journey between the two stations is expected to take roughly 64 minutes.

That means commuters can use the travel time for activities other than driving. They can sit back, work, read, use their phones or simply relax during the journey.

For people who currently spend several hours each day driving, that change could have a meaningful impact on their daily routine.

Rail and Metro connections could make the journey easier

The value of the new train service does not depend only on the journey between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For many passengers, the ability to connect easily with local public transportation will be equally important.

The Dubai station is connected to the Dubai Metro network, giving passengers an option for continuing their journeys after arriving in the emirate.

Al Yalayis Station is linked with Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station on the Red Line through a dedicated pedestrian bridge.

This connection could be particularly useful for commuters whose workplaces are located along or near the Metro network.

Instead of hiring a taxi for the entire journey from the railway station to their final destination, passengers can use the Metro for the next stage.

That creates a combination of transport options: a taxi, bus or private vehicle can be used to reach the railway station, the train can handle the inter-emirate portion of the journey, and the Metro or another local service can be used to reach the workplace.

Such combinations could make rail more practical for people who do not live close enough to a railway station to walk or drive directly there.

Abu Dhabi passengers test the service on its first day

Among the passengers travelling on the new service were Abu Dhabi residents Hari Krishnan and Akshaj P Viswam.

The two colleagues were travelling to Dubai for work-related training and decided to use the new train rather than their usual bus.

For them, the launch provided an opportunity to try a different way of travelling between the two emirates.

Hari explained that they normally make the journey by bus. After learning that the passenger train had begun operations, they decided to give it a try.

Their journey began with a taxi ride from their home in Baniyas to Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station. The drive took approximately 15 minutes.

The timing of the train suited their plans, allowing them to reach Dubai at around 8am.

Once they arrived, they planned to continue their journey using the Dubai Metro before heading to their training session in Deira.

Their trip demonstrates how multiple modes of public transportation can be combined to create a complete journey.

Rather than depending on a private vehicle from door to door, passengers can use a short taxi ride to reach the railway station, travel between emirates by train and then use the Metro for the final section.

For residents whose homes and workplaces are located close to public transportation networks, this could make the rail option considerably more attractive.

The cost equation will vary from passenger to passenger

While some early travellers have reported substantial savings, the financial advantage of Etihad Rail will not be identical for every commuter.

A passenger who lives close to a station and can use inexpensive public transportation for the first and final sections of the trip could have a relatively low overall travel cost.

Someone who lives farther away and needs to take taxis on both ends of the journey will have additional expenses.

The train fare itself starts at Dh39 for Comfort Class, making it considerably different from the cost of a long-distance taxi journey. However, commuters will need to calculate the complete door-to-door cost rather than looking only at the train ticket.

Factors such as taxi fares, parking expenses, fuel, vehicle maintenance and Metro or bus fares can all influence the final calculation.

For drivers, time is another consideration.

A private car may appear more convenient because it offers direct travel from home to the workplace. But commuters also have to account for fuel consumption, parking, traffic delays and the amount of time spent driving.

The train provides a different proposition: passengers give up some of the door-to-door flexibility of a car in exchange for a scheduled journey with a predictable travel time.

Convenience could influence long-term adoption

The initial experiences of passengers suggest that convenience will play a major role in determining how frequently residents use the service.

For Wasif, the combination of a taxi and train was already considerably cheaper than his previous taxi-only journey.

For Abhishek, the potential benefit was primarily measured in hours saved.

For Hari and Akshaj, the attraction was the opportunity to combine the train with the Metro and avoid their usual bus journey.

These different experiences show that there is no single reason for choosing the train.

Some passengers may prioritise price. Others may care more about travel time, comfort or reliability.

For daily commuters, consistency could be particularly important.

A journey that normally takes significantly longer during peak traffic can make planning the working day difficult. A scheduled train journey provides a clearer framework for deciding when to leave home and when to expect to arrive.

However, the total journey time will still depend on the first and final legs of the trip.

Someone living far from the railway station may need to leave home well before the train departure time, while passengers whose destinations are not close to a Metro station may need another taxi after reaching Dubai.

A potential alternative to long-distance driving

The launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger services represents a new option for residents who regularly move between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The route is particularly relevant to people whose daily schedules require them to cross the emirates for employment, education, training or other commitments.

Previously, many such travellers relied on private cars, taxis or buses.

The introduction of a direct rail connection adds another option to that mix.

With five departures from Dubai and five return services from Abu Dhabi each day, commuters have several scheduled services to choose from. The early morning departures are particularly relevant to people travelling for work.

The 6.14am and 7.14am departures from Dubai provide morning travel options, while return services in the afternoon and evening accommodate passengers heading back after work.

The schedule may also make the service useful for people who do not need to travel every day but make regular weekly journeys between the emirates.

Wasif, for example, indicated that he was likely to use the train every week rather than necessarily relying on it for every single trip.

What commuters will be watching

As more passengers begin using the service, several factors are likely to influence whether it becomes part of their regular travel routine.

The first is the ease of reaching the stations.

The train itself may take approximately 64 minutes, but a commuter’s actual door-to-door journey will include the time required to reach the station and continue from the destination station to the workplace.

The second consideration is cost.

Passengers will compare the price of a train ticket with their existing spending on taxis, fuel, parking and other transportation.

The third factor is scheduling.

People with fixed working hours will need train departures that fit comfortably around their daily routines. Having several services throughout the day gives passengers more flexibility, but individual commuters will still need to select services that match their schedules.

Finally, the availability of onward connections will be important.

The stronger the links between Etihad Rail, the Dubai Metro, buses, taxis and other local transportation services, the easier it may be for passengers to complete their journeys without relying on private cars.

Early journeys point to changing commuting habits

The first passengers on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi service have already provided different examples of how the new rail connection could be used.

For a frequent taxi user such as Wasif, the financial difference can be significant. His first journey cost Dh173 when the taxi to the station and train fare were combined, compared with more than Dh350 for a previous one-way taxi trip.

For Abhishek, the potential advantage is measured in time. His existing return journey can take several hours because of traffic, making a 64-minute inter-emirate train journey an appealing alternative if the connections at either end are convenient.

Hari and Akshaj demonstrated another possibility by combining a taxi, the Etihad Rail service and the Dubai Metro to reach their destination in Deira.

Together, these early journeys show how the passenger railway can fit into different commuting patterns.

Rather than replacing every existing form of transportation, the train can become one part of a broader network in which passengers combine different services according to their needs.

A new chapter in UAE inter-emirate mobility

The launch of passenger services between Dubai and Abu Dhabi gives residents another way to navigate one of the UAE’s busiest inter-emirate corridors.

For some travellers, the attraction will be the potential to reduce transportation costs. For others, the main benefit may be avoiding lengthy drives and unpredictable traffic.

With Comfort Class fares starting at Dh39, Premium Class from Dh109 and a journey time of approximately 64 minutes, Etihad Rail offers commuters a scheduled alternative to travelling the entire distance by road.

The overall<?marker name="assistant-pending-6e8247fb-1e6a-406e-af38-2ec60b4b491e-pending-tail"?> practicality of the service will ultimately depend on individual circumstances, including where passengers live, where they work, how they reach the stations and what onward transportation is available.

But the experiences of the first passengers suggest that the new rail connection is already changing the way some residents think about travelling between the two emirates.

For workers who make the Dubai-Abu Dhabi journey regularly, the choice is no longer limited to<?marker name="assistant-pending-6e8247fb-1e6a-406e-af38-2ec60b4b491e-pending-tail"?> sitting in traffic for hours, paying for a long-distance taxi or taking a bus.

They now have another option: travel to the<?marker name="assistant-pending-6e8247fb-1e6a-406e-af38-2ec60b4b491e-pending-tail"?> station, board a scheduled train and use local transport to complete the final leg.

As more residents experience the service and work<?marker name="assistant-pending-6e8247fb-1e6a-406e-af38-2ec60b4b491e-pending-tail"?> out the most efficient combinations for their individual journeys, Etihad Rail could become an increasingly visible part of the UAE’s daily commuting landscape.

 <div
