However, the company is facing increasing scrutiny over privacy and safety concerns as CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepares to unveil products aimed at the next generation of AI-powered technology.

The company’s annual Connect event began on Wednesday at its headquarters in Menlo Park, where Meta is expected to showcase its latest developments across artificial intelligence, wearable technology and other products.

Earlier this month, Meta introduced Muse, an AI-powered consumer application designed to act as a digital assistant and complete tasks on behalf of users.

The service can be connected to different personal accounts, including those related to shopping, healthcare and financial services. Once connected, users can instruct the AI to handle a variety of activities, such as arranging appointments, registering for services or making phone calls.

The move comes as companies take different approaches to the emerging market for AI agents. Amazon recently prevented Meta’s AI systems from automatically making purchases for customers. At the same time, companies including Instacart, Shopify and Expedia have entered partnerships aimed at bringing their services into Muse.

Muse runs on Meta’s own artificial intelligence models and is positioned as a competitor to products such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

Smart glasses become a major focus

Meta’s push into AI extends beyond software. The company has been developing smart glasses for several years, launching its first interactive eyewear in 2021, before ChatGPT’s arrival helped trigger widespread interest in generative AI.

Since then, Meta’s glasses have gained additional features and become increasingly sophisticated.

Last year, the company introduced augmented reality glasses featuring built-in displays capable of projecting visual information onto the lenses. Meta also launched its own range of AI-enabled glasses earlier this year, alongside its continuing collaboration with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, which manufactures several Ray-Ban-branded Meta models.

The rapid development of camera-equipped smart eyewear has also raised questions about privacy. Critics have expressed concern about how people nearby can know when they are being recorded, with some using the provocative nickname “pervert glasses” to describe the devices.

At last year’s Connect event, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox rejected the idea that privacy concerns would prevent the technology from becoming mainstream. Speaking to media outlets, including AFP, he said society would gradually develop new expectations and behaviours around the use of smart glasses.

Meta has since introduced additional safeguards. The company says a visible recording light will remain active whenever the camera is being used, while attempts to interfere with or disable the indicator are designed to shut down the camera.

The company is also reportedly exploring further products, including a new set of glasses focused exclusively on audio and another generation of mixed-reality eyewear.

Privacy and children’s safety remain challenges

Meta’s privacy concerns are not limited to its wearable technology. The company has also faced regulatory and legal scrutiny over the safety of children and the handling of younger users on its social media platforms.

In August, Meta reached a settlement involving dozens of US attorneys general who had accused the company of breaching consumer protection requirements and laws relating to children’s online privacy.

Under the settlement, Meta agreed to pay as much as $18 billion in fines and introduce additional restrictions affecting teenage users.

The company is also dealing with restrictions and potential bans affecting younger users in various countries. In the United States, thousands of personal injury cases connected to alleged harms involving its platforms remain pending in state courts.

As Meta expands its AI products and wearable technology, the company is therefore balancing its push for innovation with increasing attention from regulators, consumers and privacy advocates. The latest products are designed to make AI more deeply integrated into everyday activities, but their wider adoption is likely to depend not only on their capabilities but also on how the company addresses concerns around privacy, safety and responsible use.

Meta is accelerating its investment in artificial intelligence and wearable technology, particularly smart glasses, as the company continues expanding these products while facing increasing public scrutiny and concerns surrounding privacy, data collection and the use of AI-powered devices

[12,9
["post-48508","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-uae","pmpro-has-access
["GET
