Guardians of Security: Emirati Women Shaping the Future of Dubai Police’s Elite K9 Unit

For an inspiring segment of Emirati women, safeguarding their homeland and community goes far beyond traditional administrative or desk roles. Instead, it involves standing shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most disciplined, highly capable, and meticulously conditioned operatives in law enforcement: the specialized working dogs of the police force.

Within the high-stakes environment of the Dubai Police K9 Unit, visionary Emirati women are breaking convention, carving out vital career paths, and spearheading specialized roles. Their contributions are multifaceted, spanning the complex behavioral training and handling of tactical police canines to providing rigorous veterinary and operational support that ensures these animals remain in peak physical condition and perpetually mission-ready.

On the Front Lines: High-Profile Security and International Deployments

Among the trailblazers in this demanding field is Corporal First Class Rawdah Abdullah Salem Obaid, an Assistant Trainer stationed within the Security Inspection Department’s K9 Unit. Reflecting on her tenure, Corporal Obaid shares that her most profound and unforgettable professional milestones have been forged during high-security deployments at major global summits.

A prime example of her operational involvement includes her service at COP19—the 19th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. During this monumental international gathering hosted in the UAE, the K9 division was tasked with maintaining rigorous perimeter security, reinforcing public safety, and ensuring the absolute protection of global dignitaries and attendees.

“We secured the event by maintaining a security presence and helping ensure the safety of the event and those attending,” Corporal Obaid noted in an interview with Khaleej Times.

Importantly, the operational footprint of female K9 personnel extends far beyond domestic borders. While Corporal Obaid’s direct engagements have centered on national security events, she proudly highlights that her female peers have represented the UAE on critical international missions across France and Morocco.

  • Missions in France: Dubai Police female K9 handlers and their dogs were deployed to help secure major high-profile public events, managing venue access control, reinforcing perimeter security, and optimizing crowd management protocols.

  • Missions in Morocco: Female personnel contributed specialized expertise to complex search operations, working closely with canine partners to locate missing persons in challenging terrain.

These cross-border deployments demonstrate not only the world-class caliber of the Dubai Police K9 unit, but also the vital operational capability that female Emirati officers bring to international policing cooperation. Furthermore, Corporal Obaid emphasizes that these canine assets have consistently driven successful outcomes in local investigations, giving law enforcement officers a decisive edge in solving complex cases across various specialized branches.

Rigorous Conditioning: Preparing Canines for Diverse Global Environments

Transforming a working dog into an elite asset capable of handling international crises and high-risk security sweeps requires far more than standard obedience drills. Search-and-rescue canines, in particular, undergo grueling, multi-faceted training regimens designed to simulate unpredictable real-world scenarios.

To ensure absolute reliability, these dogs are conditioned across a vast spectrum of terrains and geographies. Training protocols regularly take place across flat urban landscapes, sprawling desert environments, dense forests, and rugged wilderness zones. This versatility ensures that whether a dog is navigating shifting sand dunes or complex indoor structures, its response remains sharp and focused.

For canines stationed primarily in the UAE, adapting to dramatic thermal and environmental shifts is a core pillar of their preparation. Corporal Obaid points out a crucial logistical challenge:

“The environment can be different. We may have hot weather here, while the dogs could be required to work in colder countries.”

To mitigate this, trainers systematically expose the dogs to varied climatic conditions. This rigorous thermal and environmental conditioning guarantees that the animals can seamlessly adapt, maintain their stamina, and execute their duties flawlessly regardless of sudden shifts in weather or unfamiliar geographical surroundings.

For professionals like Corporal Obaid, the true reward lies in the execution of the mission itself. The satisfaction of participating in high-stakes operations—whether patrolling a domestic venue or aiding an international search—is immeasurable, particularly when those efforts yield tangible, positive results that protect human life and uphold justice.

Shattering Barriers: Empowering Women in Traditional Spheres

Choosing to pursue a demanding, field-based career in law enforcement comes with its unique set of physical and operational hurdles. However, Corporal Obaid has embraced every challenge with unwavering resilience and professional dedication.

She credits the robust, institutional support extended to Emirati women as a transformative force. This encouragement has fostered deep self-confidence, empowering women to step forward, excel, and redefine professional boundaries in sectors that were historically viewed as male-dominated domains. By combining tactical expertise, cultural adaptability, and deep dedication, these female officers are proving that leadership and operational excellence know no gender, paving the way for future generations of women in public service.

Beyond the Leash: Leadership Support, Canine Synergy, and Specialized Veterinary Care in the Dubai Police K9 Unit

The remarkable expansion of female participation within law enforcement in the United Arab Emirates is deeply anchored in a supportive national vision. Reflecting on the broader cultural and institutional landscape, Corporal First Class Rawdah Abdullah Salem Obaid highlights how pivotal government backing has been for women across various sectors.

“The support from our country, government and leadership empowers women in different fields,” she shared.

This unwavering encouragement has cultivated an environment of profound self-assurance, translating directly into elevated professional performance, sharpened technical capabilities, and heightened security awareness.

Furthermore, female K9 personnel serve an indispensable operational function that bridges modern policing with local societal norms. During specialized search and inspection operations involving women, the presence of female officers is crucial. Their involvement ensures complete alignment with the UAE’s cultural values and social environment, guaranteeing that law enforcement procedures are conducted with the utmost respect, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.

The Unbreakable Bond: The Dynamic Between Handler and K9

At the heart of any successful police dog unit lies a profound, symbiotic relationship between the animal and its human handler. Corporal Obaid notes that within the Dubai Police K9 Unit, operational efficiency is built upon exclusivity: each working dog is paired with a single, dedicated trainer.

This one-to-one pairing fosters deep mutual trust and allows the handler to develop an intuitive understanding of the animal’s distinct behavioral quirks, innate working abilities, and unique pacing styles.

For those drawn to this specialized career path, the journey typically begins with a foundational passion for animals. Over time, these individuals refine their expertise through rigorous specialist courses and continuous refresher training programs.

The K9 unit itself is exceptionally diverse, deploying dogs across a wide spectrum of specialized tactical domains, including:

    • Search and Rescue: Locating missing persons across complex urban or wilderness terrains.

    • Explosives Detection: Securing high-profile venues and neutralizing potential bomb threats.

    • Narcotics Detection: Intercepting illicit substances during customs and patrol sweeps.

    • Tracking and Apprehension: Following suspect trails and maintaining perimeter control.

Interestingly, these critical roles are not dictated solely by a dog’s breed. The unit utilizes several elite breeds—including agile Cocker Spaniels, dependable Labradors, high-drive Belgian Malinois, and resilient German Shepherds.

However, assignment is driven strictly by individual evaluation. As Corporal Obaid explains, a dog’s specific specialization is determined by its physical build, body size, cognitive intelligence, and natural speed. For instance, smaller canine breeds possess the unique physiological advantage of being able to navigate confined, narrow spaces where larger working dogs cannot physically fit, proving invaluable during specialized search operations.

Behind the Scenes: Elite Veterinary Care and Preventive Health

While handlers and trainers prepare the four-legged officers for high-stakes field missions, an equally critical team works tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain the health and vitality of the squad.

First Lieutenant Dr. Maryam Abdullah Al Jafla, a dedicated veterinarian at the K9 Unit, oversees the comprehensive medical oversight of the force. Managing a total active roster of 76 police dogs, Dr. Al Jafla and her medical team implement a stringent healthcare regime designed to ensure that every animal remains in peak physical condition.

The unit’s state-of-the-art veterinary clinic is fully equipped with dedicated functional spaces, including:

      • Examination Rooms: For primary diagnostic evaluations and physical assessments.

      • Treatment Rooms: Housing medical equipment necessary for active interventions and injury recovery.

      • Dental-Cleaning Rooms: Ensuring optimal oral hygiene, which is vital for the overall health and stamina of working dogs.

Routine clinical evaluations form the backbone of the unit’s proactive health strategy. Every single dog is systematically weighed and subjected to thorough physical examinations designed to screen for hidden illnesses, subclinical infections, or emerging musculoskeletal issues. These medical checkups are integrated directly into the weekly operational schedule, ensuring that all 76 dogs pass through the clinic for continuous monitoring.

“We have a preventive approach. We need to maintain the dogs’ weight and monitor their health through regular examinations,” Dr. Al Jafla emphasized.

This commitment to wellness extends far beyond basic physical checks. The comprehensive veterinary protocol includes rigorous parasite prevention regimens, up-to-date immunizations, and advanced diagnostic screenings. The canines receive mandatory annual vaccinations, while specialized laboratory work—including detailed blood panels and biochemical assays—is regularly performed to assess internal organ function, ensuring that the dogs are just as healthy on the inside as they appear on the outside.

Through this seamless integration of empowered female leadership, specialized canine training, and world-class veterinary medicine, the Dubai Police K9 Unit continues to set a global benchmark for excellence, security, and animal welfare.

Oral Health, Positive Veterinary Care, and the Inspiring Legacy of Emirati Women in Public Service

Maintaining the elite operational readiness of the Dubai Police K9 Unit involves meticulous attention to every facet of animal welfare, extending down to the smallest physiological details. Among these, comprehensive dental care stands as a cornerstone of the unit’s health maintenance programme.

Dental hygiene is particularly critical for working canines, as the progressive accumulation of plaque and tartar can rapidly compromise oral health, lead to periodontal disease, and ultimately diminish a dog’s physical stamina and working performance. This risk is especially pronounced in smaller canine breeds. To combat this, the internal veterinary team performs specialized dental cleanings on an as-needed basis, with individual working dogs requiring professional scaling and polishing procedures once or twice annually to keep their teeth and gums in pristine condition.

Cultivating Comfort: Transforming the Veterinary Clinic into a Safe Haven

Beyond clinical treatments and medical interventions, the veterinary team places an extraordinary emphasis on behavioral psychology, ensuring that the healthcare environment remains entirely stress-free for the animals. Law enforcement canines must trust their handlers and medical providers implicitly, meaning that associating a clinic with fear or discomfort is strictly avoided.

To achieve this, the veterinary staff utilizes advanced positive reinforcement techniques. These methods are designed to help the K9s acclimate naturally and comfortably to the clinical setting, the examination tables, and the diagnostic weighing scales.

“They have been trained that the veterinary area is not something to be afraid of,” explains First Lieutenant Dr. Maryam Abdullah Al Jafla.

This patient, reward-driven methodology has yielded remarkable, visible results. Over time, the dogs have grown completely familiar with the clinical routine. Rather than showing apprehension, the canines display calm confidence, routinely walking up to the weighing scales of their own accord the moment they enter the facility. This psychological ease ensures that routine health checks and medical procedures cause minimal anxiety, preserving the strong bond of trust between the dogs and their caretakers.

A Shared Mission: Dedication, Compassion, and Community Service

For the remarkable women driving these initiatives forward, their daily responsibilities extend far beyond traditional notions of handling elite police dogs. Their professional lives are defined by a holistic commitment: preparing the canines through rigorous environmental conditioning, safeguarding their physical and emotional well-being through proactive veterinary care, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with them in the field to protect the community.

Whether securing high-profile international summits, conducting intricate search-and-rescue operations across unforgiving terrain, or maintaining the highest standards of internal medical health, these officers embody the pinnacle of modern law enforcement.

Reflecting on her journey and the broader empowerment of women across the nation, Dr. Al Jafla shares a powerful, inspiring message addressed to all Emirati women:

“An Emirati woman is strong, with firm foundations, and always strives to be the best.”

Through unyielding dedication, professional excellence, and a deep sense of national duty, these trailblazing women are not only redefining the boundaries of specialized security work but are also paving an inspiring path for future generations across the United Arab Emirates and beyond.
