With another budget airline entering the market, other carriers may have to reassess their pricing and promotional strategies in order to remain attractive to travellers looking for the lowest possible fares.

Travel industry representatives believe the effect could be most visible on specific routes rather than across the entire UAE-Europe market. Some agents estimate that economy-class ticket prices could experience downward pressure of approximately 10 to 20 per cent on routes where Wizz Air competes directly.

However, the potential reduction should not be interpreted as an across-the-board fall in European airfares from the UAE. Ticket prices are influenced by a wide range of market conditions, including fuel expenses, seasonal travel patterns, passenger demand, available capacity and competition between airlines.

Bharat Aidasani, director of Pluto Travels, said the airline’s return could have a particularly noticeable effect on travellers who are highly sensitive to price.

According to Aidasani, the presence of an ultra-low-cost operator could encourage full-service airlines and other budget carriers to offer more competitive prices in order to retain passengers.

He estimated that economy fares on routes where Wizz Air directly competes could experience around 10 to 20 per cent downward pressure, particularly during periods when demand is weaker.

The potential benefit for passengers is therefore likely to depend heavily on the destination and timing of travel. Travellers flying during quieter periods may have a better chance of finding lower fares as airlines compete for available passengers.

During peak travel periods, however, demand can remain strong enough to keep ticket prices elevated even when several airlines operate on the same route.

Competition could give travellers more choice

Wizz Air’s return is expected to provide UAE residents with another option for reaching European destinations. The airline’s low-cost model generally focuses on keeping base fares low while allowing passengers to select additional services according to their requirements.

For travellers who prioritise price over premium services, this can provide an alternative to traditional full-service carriers.

Geoffrey Salatan, founder and CEO of Geof Travel, said the arrival of an ultra-low-cost airline typically strengthens competition within the market and gives budget-conscious passengers another choice.

However, Salatan said it would be too early to predict a precise percentage decline in fares.

Airline ticket prices can change frequently, sometimes within a short period, depending on booking levels, available seats, seasonality and other market conditions. As a result, the impact of Wizz Air’s return is likely to become clearer only after its services have been operating for some time.

Salatan expects the strongest effect to potentially emerge during off-peak periods, particularly on routes where the airline adds a significant amount of capacity.

Additional seats can increase competition among airlines, especially when carriers are attempting to fill aircraft during periods when passenger demand is relatively moderate.

For consumers, that competition could create more opportunities to compare fares before booking.

Wizz Air resumes UAE operations

The potential changes in airfare come after Wizz Air announced that it would restart operations from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The announcement marks a return to the UAE market nearly a year after the airline withdrew from its joint venture with Abu Dhabi-based ADQ.

Wizz Air had previously suspended its Abu Dhabi operations, citing several challenges affecting its ability to operate in the market.

Among the reasons given were supply chain difficulties, geopolitical uncertainty and restricted access to certain markets.

The decision to return represents a significant development for the UAE aviation sector, particularly for passengers who have previously used Wizz Air as a lower-cost alternative for European travel.

The airline’s ultra-low-cost model has historically been associated with competitive base fares, making it particularly attractive to passengers who are prepared to pay separately for optional services.

Its return could therefore have an impact beyond the number of passengers carried by Wizz Air itself.

Other airlines operating on overlapping routes may find themselves under greater pressure to compete on price, particularly when customers compare fares across multiple carriers.

Impact likely to vary by destination

Travel experts stress that Wizz Air’s return should not be viewed as a guarantee that all flights between the UAE and Europe will become cheaper.

European airfares are determined by numerous factors, and competition from one airline is only one element of the pricing equation.

Fuel costs remain a major consideration for airlines. Changes in fuel prices can affect operating expenses and ultimately influence ticket pricing.

Seasonality is another important factor. Demand for European travel can increase substantially during school holidays, summer breaks, festive periods and other popular travel windows.

When demand rises, airlines may have less incentive to reduce fares because seats are being booked more quickly.

The opposite can happen during quieter periods. If airlines have more unsold seats, competitive pricing can become an important tool for attracting passengers.

This is why travel agents expect Wizz Air’s influence to be particularly visible on selected routes and during off-peak periods.

The amount of capacity the airline introduces will also matter. If Wizz Air operates a significant number of flights on a particular route, competing airlines may have to respond more actively.

Where its presence is limited, the effect on pricing may be less pronounced.

Potential benefit for budget travellers

One of the clearest potential beneficiaries of Wizz Air’s return could be price-conscious leisure travellers.

For passengers who are primarily interested in reaching a European destination at the lowest possible cost, ultra-low-cost carriers can provide an attractive alternative.

Rather than paying for a traditional full-service package, passengers can choose the services they actually need. This model can make the headline fare considerably lower, although additional charges may apply for services such as baggage, seat selection and other extras.

The availability of lower starting fares can also encourage travellers who might otherwise postpone or reconsider an international trip.

For UAE residents, particularly those travelling for leisure, greater competition could make certain European destinations more accessible.

Travel agents say the airline’s return could also encourage people to consider destinations that may not traditionally rank among the most popular choices for UAE travellers.

Opportunities beyond major European destinations

Wizz Air has traditionally maintained a strong presence across parts of Central and Eastern Europe.

The airline’s network can therefore give travellers access to destinations outside the major European hubs that are commonly served by full-service airlines.

Lower fares may encourage travellers to explore less traditional holiday locations and consider cities and regions that they might not have previously included in their travel plans.

This could broaden the range of European destinations available to UAE residents while also creating additional demand for tourism in Central and Eastern European markets.

For some travellers, the attraction may not simply be the lower ticket price but the possibility of reaching destinations that offer a different experience from Europe’s more established tourism centres.

The combination of affordable fares and additional routes could consequently influence travel choices among budget-conscious passengers.

Possible fares starting from Dh289

The return of the ultra-low-cost carrier is also expected to introduce particularly competitive promotional fares on selected services.

Travel agents have pointed to fares starting at levels as low as Dh289 on certain routes and under specific conditions.

Such fares can be attractive to passengers who are flexible with travel dates and willing to book early.

However, the lowest advertised fares are not necessarily representative of the price passengers will pay for every journey. Airfares generally change according to availability, demand, travel dates and other conditions.

Additional services can also increase the final cost of a trip. Travellers may therefore need to compare the total price, including baggage and optional extras, rather than focusing solely on the initial fare.

Even so, low headline prices can have an important effect on the wider market because they establish a reference point against which passengers compare other airlines.

If travellers see substantially cheaper base fares available on a competing carrier, other airlines may need to adjust their offers or introduce promotions to remain competitive.

Pressure on full-service carriers

The return of an ultra-low-cost airline could have implications for both budget and full-service airlines operating between the UAE and Europe.

Full-service carriers typically offer a broader package that may include checked baggage, meals, entertainment and other services depending on the ticket class.

However, travellers who do not require those additional services may focus primarily on the price of the ticket.

This creates an opportunity for ultra-low-cost airlines to attract passengers who are prepared to accept a more basic travel experience in exchange for a lower initial fare.

As Wizz Air expands its presence, other airlines may respond with discounted economy fares, promotional offers or changes to their own pricing structures.

The result could be increased competition for passengers, particularly within the leisure segment.

Aidasani believes price-sensitive customers are likely to be among those who benefit most from this dynamic.

The potential 10 to 20 per cent downward pressure he identified should therefore be understood as an estimate for directly competing routes rather than a prediction for every UAE-Europe service.

Why an immediate market-wide fall is unlikely

Although the return of Wizz Air could improve competition, several factors make a uniform decline in fares across the UAE-Europe market unlikely.

Not every European destination will be served by the airline. Routes without direct competition from Wizz Air may experience little or no immediate pricing effect.

Similarly, routes with strong demand may remain relatively expensive even if additional capacity is introduced.

Airlines also consider their operating costs when setting fares. Higher fuel prices, airport charges, staffing costs and other expenses can limit how far ticket prices can fall.

Currency movements and wider economic conditions can also affect travel costs.

The time of year is another major variable. During peak periods, airlines can often maintain higher fares because demand is strong.

During quieter months, by contrast, competition can become more intense as carriers seek to fill available seats.

This explains why travel experts are cautious about predicting a specific percentage reduction across the entire market.

Off-peak travel could offer the biggest savings

The strongest price competition may emerge outside the busiest travel periods.

When passenger numbers are lower, airlines have a greater incentive to attract travellers through discounts and promotional campaigns.

Wizz Air’s low-cost model could amplify that competition if it introduces substantial capacity on routes where other airlines already operate.

Passengers with flexible schedules could therefore be in the best position to take advantage of lower fares.

Travellers who can choose their departure dates, fly during weekdays or avoid major holiday periods may find more opportunities to secure competitive tickets.

Those travelling at fixed times during peak seasons may see less dramatic savings.

More choices for UAE residents

Beyond pricing, the airline’s return could provide consumers with greater choice.

Having another carrier on selected routes gives travellers additional departure times, fare structures and service options to compare.

For some passengers, the ability to select a low base fare and pay only for services they need can make air travel more affordable.

Others may continue to prefer full-service airlines because of their additional facilities and bundled services.

The increased range of options allows passengers to make decisions based on their own priorities rather than being limited to a smaller selection of carriers.

A potentially important development for European travel

Wizz Air’s renewed presence in Dubai and Abu Dhabi comes at a time when travellers remain highly attentive to the cost of international air travel.

Affordable fares can influence whether consumers choose to travel, where they go and how frequently they take international trips.

For leisure passengers in particular, the availability of lower-cost flights can make European holidays more accessible.

The airline’s focus on Central and Eastern Europe may also help diversify the destinations considered by UAE travellers.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on major tourism centres, passengers may become more willing to explore smaller or less traditional European destinations if affordable direct flights are available.

This could create benefits not only for passengers but also for tourism markets served by the airline.

What travellers should expect

The return of Wizz Air is likely to create opportunities for cheaper flights, but travellers should not assume that every European route will automatically see a major price reduction.

The most significant changes are expected on routes where the airline directly competes with other carriers and adds meaningful capacity.

Off-peak travel could provide the greatest opportunity for discounts, while peak-season fares may remain relatively high because of stronger demand.

Passengers should also compare the full cost of different tickets. A low advertised fare may not include baggage, seat selection or other services, and these additions can affect the final amount paid.

Despite these considerations, the airline’s return could provide a meaningful boost to competition within the UAE-Europe aviation market.

The presence of an ultra-low-cost carrier gives consumers another option and creates a stronger incentive for competing airlines to review their pricing.

For budget-conscious travellers, that could translate into more promotional fares and greater flexibility when planning European trips.

The precise impact will depend on how much capacity Wizz Air adds, which destinations it serves, how competing airlines respond and how demand develops over the coming months.

Travel experts therefore expect the biggest benefits to appear selectively rather than uniformly across the market.

For passengers willing to travel during quieter periods and explore destinations served by the airline, the return could provide particularly attractive opportunities.

With fares potentially starting from around Dh289 on selected services, Wizz Air’s renewed UAE operations could make European travel more accessible to a wider group of residents while increasing competition among airlines serving the region.

INSIDER 18 monitored Wizz Air’s fares for flights to Budapest, Hungary, from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

For October 25, the date scheduled for the start of flight operations, the fares listed on Thursday were Dh289 for passengers travelling from Dubai at the standard rate, while Wizz Discount Club members could book the same flight for Dh244.

Travellers flying from Abu Dhabi to Budapest faced a regular fare of Dh449, with Wizz Discount Club members paying Dh404.

However, passengers planning to travel around the school winter break, which runs from December 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027, according to the Ministry of Education’s academic calendar, may find considerably higher prices. Fares during this period could climb to as much as Dh2,009.

Wizz Air’s website also lists several other European destinations, including Sofia, Larnaca, Katowice, Kraków, Bucharest Baneasa, Bucharest Otopeni and Cluj-Napoca.

When should travellers book?

Booking early could help passengers secure lower fares, as ticket prices may rise considerably as the departure date approaches. Aidasani of Pluto Travels recommends booking flights around six to 12 weeks ahead for regular travel periods. For peak travel seasons, travellers are advised to plan further in advance, ideally three to six months before departure.

The pricing structure of ultra-low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air also means that the lowest fares are available only for a limited number of seats. According to Aidasani, once these discounted seats are sold, airlines can move passengers into higher-priced fare categories, resulting in a significant increase in ticket costs.

Travellers flying from the UAE to European destinations could benefit from more competitive fares following Wizz Air’s return to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with the airline’s renewed operations expected to increase route options and potentially place downward pressure on ticket prices.

[12,9,69
["post-47898","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-uae","category-world","pmpro-has-access
["GET
