Located at the center of the Philippine archipelago, Sibuyan Island is home to one of the world\u2019s most densely packed forests, containing an estimated 1,500 trees per hectare. Known as the \u2018Galapagos of Asia,\u2019 the island is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, with many plant and animal species that exist nowhere else on Earth.<\/strong><\/p>

However, residents of San Fernando town have strongly opposed a permit allowing exploration for nickel and gold in the area, fearing damage to what is considered one of the Philippines\u2019 last untouched islands.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Municipal council members who approved a resolution on July 17 supporting the proposed mining project of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC) have faced strong backlash from residents. Since Saturday, angry islanders have gathered outside the officials\u2019 homes, sounding motorcycle horns and staging protests to express their opposition. The demonstrations have transformed the island\u2019s usually peaceful atmosphere into a public outcry against what residents call the surrender of their homeland to commercial interests.<\/strong><\/p>

The proposed mining exploration covers 42 hectares near the base of Mount Guiting-Guiting, a renowned peak that holds great cultural and environmental importance for Filipino climbers and conservation advocates.<\/strong><\/p>

The council\u2019s endorsement was made despite the refusal of the local village to support the mining activities.<\/strong><\/p>

The embattled councillors have also failed to receive support from Mayor Fernando Marin, who criticized their decision. Marin, a long-time environmental advocate, previously led efforts to block heavy mining machinery through human barricades and won office on a platform opposing mining expansion.<\/strong>Despite the tension, authorities permitted the protests to continue, stating that the noise demonstrations remained peaceful and organized, with no reports of disturbances or violence.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sibuyan Island, a crescent-shaped island covering around 45,600 hectares, is largely occupied by the Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park. Because the island remained isolated and was never connected to other land areas in the Philippine archipelago, it developed a distinctive ecosystem with its own unique species of plants and animals.<\/strong><\/p>

Recognized as a major global hotspot for plant diversity, Sibuyan is home to approximately 700 species of vascular plants, including 54 species found only on the island. Its rich vegetation includes the rare Sibuyan pitcher plant, diverse tree species, understory vegetation, and unusual varieties of palms. The island also provides an ideal habitat for the Philippine ironwood, locally known as mangkono, a tree valued for producing one of the densest and heaviest timbers in the world.<\/strong><\/p>

The island\u2019s biodiversity extends to wildlife as well, with at least 130 bird species, nine species of native land mammals, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. Rare and threatened species such as the Sibuyan striped shrew, Philippine hanging parrot, and Sibuyan pygmy fruit bat are among the many creatures that depend on this isolated environment.<\/strong>Beyond its natural wealth, Sibuyan is famous for Mount Guiting-Guiting, one of the Philippines\u2019 most demanding mountain climbs. Rated 9\/9 in technical difficulty, the mountain\u2019s name means \u2018jagged,\u2019 reflecting its sharp ridges, rugged peaks, and steep rocky terrain.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sibuyan remains one of the few islands in the Philippines where communities have successfully pushed back against large-scale commercial mining projects. Through continued resistance, residents have helped preserve the island\u2019s forests and prevented its once-pristine rivers from being polluted by mining waste and sediment.<\/strong><\/p>

Despite the environmental concerns linked to mining activities, the sector\u2019s overall contribution to the Philippine economy remains relatively small. According to the Center for Environment Concerns, mining and quarrying account for only around 0.8% to 1% of the country\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP), while providing just about 0.5% of total employment nationwide. The group said these figures challenge claims that mining plays a major role in economic development.<\/strong><\/p>

The administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has continued to promote mining exploration in areas with remaining mineral resources, encouraging both domestic and foreign investors. During his recent visit to Vancouver, Marcos attended the signing of a mining agreement with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which included the continuation of disputed mining activities in other parts of the Philippines.<\/strong><\/p>

Mayor Fernando Marin has vowed to keep fighting for the protection of Sibuyan Island. After being elected, he emphasized that his administration values the well-being of people over financial gains, urging the municipal council to respect and listen to the concerns of local residents.<\/strong><\/p>

However, the island\u2019s defenders face significant challenges.
