According to him, advancements in AI have made it easier for cybercriminals to create convincing digital imitations of facial features, voices, fingerprints, and other biometric identifiers that are commonly used for identity verification.<\/p><p>He noted that malicious actors are constantly searching for new ways to bypass security systems, and the growing accessibility of AI technologies has expanded the range of tools available to them. Deepfake technology, synthetic media generation, and AI-assisted image manipulation are examples of innovations that could potentially be exploited to imitate a person&#8217;s biometric characteristics if adequate safeguards are not in place.<\/p><p>For this reason, Yamout stressed the importance of implementing robust security measures around the collection, storage, and processing of biometric information. Financial institutions and other organisations that use biometric authentication should treat this data as highly sensitive and ensure it is protected using advanced encryption methods and strict security controls.<\/p><p>He explained that biometric information differs significantly from traditional credentials such as passwords or PIN codes. If a password is compromised, a user can simply change it and create a new one. The same flexibility does not exist when it comes to biometric identifiers. Individuals cannot easily replace their fingerprints, facial characteristics, or other biological traits if those details are exposed or misused.<\/p><p>Because biometric data is permanent in nature, its protection requires a much higher level of responsibility from organisations that collect and manage it. Yamout emphasised that companies must invest in comprehensive security frameworks designed to prevent unauthorised access, minimise the risk of breaches, and ensure that customer data remains protected throughout its lifecycle.<\/p><p>According to the cybersecurity expert, safeguarding biometric information should involve multiple layers of protection rather than relying on a single security mechanism. Strong encryption, secure databases, access controls, regular security audits, and continuous monitoring all play important roles in reducing the likelihood of data compromise.<\/p><p>He also highlighted the importance of ongoing risk assessment as technology continues to evolve. Cyber threats are constantly changing, and organisations must adapt their security practices accordingly. What may be considered a robust defence today could become less effective in the future as criminals develop new techniques and tools.<\/p><p>The issue is particularly relevant in the banking sector, where biometric authentication is increasingly being used to authorise transactions, verify customer identities, and secure access to digital banking services. As financial institutions continue to embrace digital transformation, ensuring the security of biometric systems has become a critical component of overall cybersecurity strategy.<\/p><p>Yamout pointed out that financial organisations must not only implement strong technical protections but also maintain clear governance and oversight of biometric applications. Regular testing, monitoring, and evaluation can help identify vulnerabilities before they are exploited by attackers.<\/p><p>Regulatory frameworks also play an important role in maintaining security standards. The UAE Central Bank has established guidelines that require financial institutions to protect customer credentials against potential vulnerabilities, unauthorised access, and other security risks. Banks are expected to continuously monitor their authentication systems and take proactive measures to detect and address any potential breaches or weaknesses.<\/p><p>These requirements reflect the growing recognition that biometric data must be handled with the highest levels of care. Regulators understand that maintaining public confidence in digital banking services depends on the ability of financial institutions to effectively safeguard customer information.<\/p><p>While biometric authentication offers significant advantages, Yamout believes the strongest security strategy involves combining biometrics with additional verification methods rather than relying on a single factor alone. This approach, commonly known as multi-factor authentication, adds extra layers of protection by requiring users to verify their identity through multiple independent methods.<\/p><p>For example, a customer may be asked to provide biometric verification, such as a fingerprint or facial scan, alongside a PIN, password, or another authentication factor. In this model, successful access depends on both something the user is and something the user knows.<\/p><p>By requiring multiple forms of verification, organisations can significantly reduce the likelihood of unauthorised access. Even if one authentication factor is compromised, attackers would still need to overcome additional security barriers before gaining access to sensitive information or financial accounts.<\/p><p>Yamout explained that two-factor authentication already provides a substantial improvement over single-factor systems, while three-factor authentication can offer even stronger protection in high-risk environments. The combination of multiple security layers makes it considerably more difficult for criminals to bypass defences and successfully conduct fraudulent activities.<\/p><p>Beyond strengthening account security, multi-factor authentication also helps protect financial transactions, personal information, and other sensitive data from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. In some cases, she added, fingerprint recognition used in mobile banking applications does not always function consistently, leading to repeated authentication issues for users.<\/p><p>From her perspective, the growing reliance on biometric verification in banking apps is less about user preference and more about a gradual shift in default security settings. She described a process where users are initially encouraged to enable biometric login features, then increasingly prompted through repeated notifications, until the option to rely on alternative methods becomes less visible or more inconvenient. Over time, she suggested, this creates a situation where enabling biometric authentication feels less like a choice and more like an expectation.<\/p><p>Sadarangani expressed discomfort with what she sees as a subtle reduction in user control over personal security decisions. In her view, customers should retain the freedom to decide how they want to access their financial accounts, especially when it comes to sensitive authentication methods. She believes that offering multiple options, such as PIN-based login alongside biometric verification, would better respect individual preferences and comfort levels.<\/p><p>While acknowledging the convenience offered by fingerprint and facial recognition systems, she questioned whether they are always the most secure or practical solution for every user. According to her, traditional PIN codes\u2014when used responsibly and kept confidential\u2014can still provide a reliable layer of protection without involving the risks associated with permanent biological data.<\/p><p>She also highlighted the importance of recognising that convenience and security do not always align perfectly. Although biometric systems can streamline the login process and reduce the need to remember complex passwords, they also introduce concerns related to privacy, data storage, and potential misuse of irreplaceable personal identifiers.<\/p><p>As the founder and CEO of marketing agency Iconic Episode, Sadarangani approaches the issue from both a consumer and professional standpoint. She noted that while technological advancements in digital banking are generally welcome, they should not come at the cost of user autonomy. In her opinion, financial institutions must be careful not to remove meaningful choice from customers under the assumption that newer systems are automatically better or safer.<\/p><p>She emphasised that trust plays a crucial role in how customers interact with digital banking platforms. When users feel that they have control over their security preferences, they are more likely to feel confident and comfortable using those services. Conversely, when options are limited or gradually phased out, it can create hesitation or skepticism, even if the underlying technology is designed to enhance protection.<\/p><p>Sadarangani believes that banks should aim to strike a balance between innovation and flexibility. While biometric authentication undoubtedly has advantages in terms of speed and ease of use, it should not completely replace other forms of verification. Instead, it should exist as part of a broader toolkit of security options that cater to different user needs and risk perceptions.<\/p><p>Ultimately, she argues that the decision regarding how an individual secures their financial data should remain with the customer. Whether someone prefers biometrics, PIN codes, or a combination of both, the key principle, in her view, is choice.
