During a recent trip to Havelock Island, now officially known as Swaraj Dweep, in India\u2019s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, I had the unique opportunity to experience the island\u2019s marine life in a way that was completely new to me. My exploration took place at Tilar Siro, a CGH Earth Experience property, where nature and conservation blend seamlessly with immersive tourism. The experience promised not just a view of the ocean but an intimate encounter with the tidal ecosystem that many visitors rarely get to see.<\/p>

The adventure began with a warm greeting from Sreelakshmi, a knowledgeable marine expert and naturalist associated with Tilar Siro. Before setting off, she asked if I had ever participated in an intertidal walk. When I admitted that I had not, she provided a detailed explanation of what the experience would entail. \u201cThe walk takes place in the tidal zone during low tide,\u201d she said. \u201cIt allows you to observe marine creatures in their natural habitat, often in places that are completely hidden at high tide.\u201d Her enthusiasm and depth of knowledge immediately set the tone for the exploration, making it clear that this was not just a casual beach stroll but an educational and environmentally conscious adventure.<\/p>

Before venturing out, I was provided with a pair of specially designed shoes. These shoes are essential for protecting the delicate marine ecosystem, ensuring that no creatures are harmed while participants walk through the tidal flats. \u201cYou can keep these shoes in your room and use them whenever you go for the intertidal walk during your stay,\u201d explained Adarsh V.K., the resort\u2019s general manager. This small but thoughtful provision highlighted the property\u2019s commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship.<\/p>

The resort itself is situated on the pristine Vijaynagar Beach, also known as Beach Number 5, a location celebrated for its turquoise waters, soft sandy stretches, and rich coastal biodiversity. The architecture and design of the property are deeply inspired by the island\u2019s natural surroundings. Each room reflects tropical life, incorporating elements that echo the rhythms and colors of the environment. Wooden boardwalks connect the different areas of the resort, seamlessly integrating with the lush vegetation that surrounds the property and giving guests the sense of walking through a tropical forest as they move between rooms and communal spaces.<\/p>

The name of the resort, Tilar Siro, holds a meaningful connection to the island\u2019s history and culture. It is derived from the language of the Great Andamanese Tribe: \u201cThi\u201d meaning Earth, \u201cLar\u201d meaning from, and \u201cSiro\u201d meaning sea. Together, the name can be interpreted as \u201cland emerging from the sea,\u201d a poetic nod to the island itself. This thoughtful naming is emblematic of the resort\u2019s philosophy, which emphasizes respect for the natural and cultural heritage of the Andaman Islands while offering guests immersive experiences that foster a deeper appreciation of the environment.<\/p>

By the time I set out for the intertidal walk, I felt a growing anticipation\u2014not just to witness marine life, but to connect with the island\u2019s delicate ecosystems in a way that is rare for most visitors. The part of my stay I had been most eager about was the intertidal walk, and I was fortunate that the low tide fell late on my very first afternoon at the resort. Because the timing of low tide shifts slightly each day, no two walks are ever the same. This natural variability means that the marine creatures you encounter, the patterns of the exposed reef, and even the atmosphere of the shore differ daily, adding an exciting element of unpredictability and discovery.<\/p>

Before we set off, Sreelakshmi, the marine expert guiding us, offered an overview of the oceanic zones we would traverse. She explained that the marine environment is generally divided into three main areas: the shoreline, the intertidal zone, and the fore reef. \u201cThe intertidal area itself can be further categorized into the reef crust, reef flat, and fore reef,\u201d she elaborated. She described the shoreline as the section where the ocean meets the land, where we would find dead coral fragments, an assortment of shells, and small hermit crabs scuttling about. The next zone, she said, is rich with algae and smaller marine organisms, while the reef crust\u2014the highest point in the intertidal region\u2014is where the most vibrant life can be found, including live corals and a variety of colorful fish darting through the shallow waters. Her detailed explanation set the stage for the exploration, building anticipation for the diversity of life we were about to encounter.<\/p>

Before we stepped onto the exposed reef, Sreelakshmi also shared safety guidelines. She reminded us to tread carefully, to alert the team immediately if anyone felt uneasy, and most importantly, to avoid touching any marine life or corals. This precaution was crucial, not only for our safety but also for protecting the delicate ecosystem we were about to explore. Eager to begin, I nodded in agreement and made my way toward the sandy shore, my curiosity piqued by the mysterious formations scattered across the beach. At first glance, the dark, jagged structures looked like ordinary rocks, but I soon learned from Akhil, the naturalist guiding me, that they were in fact remnants of dead corals, silent witnesses to the life that once thrived in these waters. The realization immediately made me appreciate the delicate balance of the coastal ecosystem.<\/p>

As I walked further, intricate patterns caught my eye, etched meticulously into the sand. Akhil explained that these designs were created by sand bubbler crabs, tiny yet industrious creatures that filter micronutrients from the sand and eject the remainder in neat little pellets. \u201cThey use one side of their mouth to ingest the sand and the other to expel it,\u201d he said, \u201censuring they never reprocess the same grains twice. These formations are often called sand mandalas because of their precise, almost artistic layout.\u201d Observing the tiny crabs at work, creating what looked like natural mosaics, was mesmerizing and a vivid reminder of nature\u2019s intricate artistry.<\/p>

Suddenly, a flash of bright orange caught my attention\u2014a fiddler crab scuttling across the sand. Akhil pointed out that the male uses his oversized claw to wave and signal to potential mates, a fascinating display of behavior that is both functional and dramatic. Not far from there, Sreelakshmi gently scooped up a nearly invisible glass shrimp from the shallow water, allowing me to marvel at its delicate, translucent body. I realized that without her careful guidance, I would have likely walked right past it.<\/p>

Within just a few minutes of stepping onto the intertidal zone, I had already encountered a remarkable variety of marine life. The experience felt like opening a hidden door into an entirely new world, each creature revealing a story about survival, adaptation, and the quiet wonders of life beneath the tide. Marine Wonders<\/strong><\/p>

When it comes to marine ecology, corals are often the first things that come to mind, and during our walk, we were lucky to encounter a patch of live coral. I noticed numerous small, rounded formations across its surface. Sreelakshmi explained that the coral itself is actually a living organism, and each of those tiny circles is called a polyp. \u201cA single coral requires thousands of these individual animals, so you can imagine how many make up an entire reef,\u201d she said, highlighting the complexity of these underwater communities.<\/p>

Nearby, I spotted a green, sap-eating sea slug, typically found living in colonies, quietly grazing along the reef. I also noticed the shell of a venomous cone snail, one of the more dangerous residents of the intertidal zone due to its potent sting, though thankfully, I only saw the empty shell during my walk. Another fascinating creature was a brittle starfish, its long, thin arms barely visible beneath the shallow, muddy water. Akhil pointed out that these nocturnal animals are usually very elusive. \u201cThey emerge mostly at night, and their presence indicates a thriving, healthy ecosystem,\u201d he explained. \u201cEven if they lose an arm, they can regenerate it, which is remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Ocean Odyssey<\/strong><\/p>

As I continued along the intertidal zone, my attention was drawn to a small rock teeming with movement. Upon closer inspection, I discovered a group of rock skippers\u2014amphibious creatures capable of living both on land and in water. Scattered among them were numerous sea snails, cleverly hidden beneath their shells and clinging tightly to the rocks during low tide. Not far away, I observed a pistol shrimp, named for its claw that functions like a miniature gun, and a truly remarkable marine mollusc thought to have existed since the age of dinosaurs. Sreelakshmi explained, \u201cThis animal is unique in the animal kingdom\u2014it\u2019s like a living sandwich, with eight hard outer plates and one soft interior plate. Once it finds a home, it tends to stay there, moving very slowly. You might see it again if you return tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>

I also came across a cork sponge, whose arm can extend up to 45 centimeters, and a crenate swimming crab, diligently paddling through the water while scraping algae from dead corals. The moon crab caught my eye next, identifiable by the distinct V- or U-shaped mark on the underside of its abdomen, which indicates gender\u2014the U-shape marking a female, adapted for carrying more eggs. Nearby, a smooth, rounded structure revealed itself as a moon snail egg case, cleverly constructed from sand and mucus to shield the eggs from predators.<\/p>

Further along, I glimpsed a mantis shrimp, famous for delivering the most powerful punch in the animal kingdom, capable of cracking shells and even glass. The area was also rich in marine flora, from green seaweed, a calcium-rich variety often used in salads, to seasonal brown and red algae, harvested for anti-aging creams and studied for potential cancer-preventive properties. Seagrass swayed gently beneath the shallow waters, adding to the lush underwater landscape. To my delight, I even spotted a juvenile octopus, a rare and fleeting sight.<\/p>

As dusk approached and the walk drew to a close, I felt a profound sense of awe and gratitude.
