Watch: RTA number plate auction records its biggest haul yet, surpassing Dh109 million

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved a record-breaking total at its latest special vehicle number plate auction, generating Dh109,026,000 — the highest amount ever raised through such an event.
Held on Saturday, December 27, the auction attracted intense competition as bidders vied for exclusive plate numbers, with several lots selling for multi-million-dirham sums. A total of 90 premium plates were offered during RTA’s 120th public auction, featuring two-, three-, four- and five-digit combinations. The plates were drawn from a range of codes including AA, BB, CC, K, N, O, R, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z.
Some of the top-selling plates included BB12, which fetched Dh9.66 million, AA25 at Dh8.04 million, BB30 at Dh6.74 million, and CC100, which sold for Dh4.21 million.
All successful bids were subject to a 5 per cent value-added tax. To qualify for participation, bidders were required to hold an active Dubai traffic file and submit a refundable security cheque of Dh25,000 payable to the RTA. In addition, a non-refundable registration fee of Dh120 was charged, payable at Customer Happiness Centres. Participants also had the option to make payments using credit cards through the RTA’s official website.
Those who completed their registration in advance were given priority access to the auction. The RTA stated that these auctions are conducted in line with principles of fairness and transparency, ensuring equal opportunity for participants to acquire distinctive number plates that often hold personal or symbolic significance.
Officials noted that the strong turnout and record-breaking total reflect the continued popularity of distinctive number plates in Dubai, where such plates are often seen as status symbols and long-term assets. Many buyers view rare plate numbers not only as a personal statement but also as an investment, as demand for premium combinations has remained consistently high over the years. RTA auctions regularly attract collectors, business owners and car enthusiasts who are willing to pay substantial sums for exclusivity. The authority said this sustained interest demonstrates confidence in Dubai’s vehicle registration system and the prestige associated with unique plate numbers.
The auction also highlighted the diverse range of bidders participating in these events, from individual collectors to corporate buyers. According to RTA, the transparent auction process allows participants from different backgrounds to compete on an equal footing. Online payment options and advance registration have made the process more accessible, enabling wider participation. The authority added that by continuously refining its auction mechanisms, it aims to enhance customer experience while maintaining strict regulatory oversight. These measures have helped strengthen trust in the system and contributed to consistently strong auction results.
RTA emphasised that proceeds from licence plate auctions support the authority’s broader transport and infrastructure initiatives across Dubai. Revenue generated from such events contributes to improving road networks, public transport services and smart mobility solutions in the emirate. By channeling funds back into transport development, the authority ensures that high-profile auctions deliver wider public benefits. Officials said this approach aligns with Dubai’s long-term vision of building a world-class, sustainable transport ecosystem that meets the needs of a growing population.
Over the years, Dubai has built a global reputation for hosting high-value number plate auctions, with several plates fetching prices that rival luxury assets. Record-breaking sales have often made international headlines, reinforcing the city’s image as a hub for unique automotive culture. Industry observers note that Dubai’s strong economy, affluent market and passion for personalised vehicles continue to drive demand. As more collectors enter the market, competition for rare combinations is expected to remain intense at future auctions.
Looking ahead, RTA confirmed that it will continue organising regular auctions, both in-person and online, to meet growing demand. Future auctions may include new plate series and additional digital features to streamline participation. The authority encouraged interested buyers to monitor official announcements and register early to secure access. With sustained interest and rising competition, RTA expects upcoming auctions to continue delivering strong results while offering participants the opportunity to own highly coveted and distinctive vehicle number plates.
