FIFA confirms Dubai as host city for the 2026 World Football Awards

FIFA has announced a collaboration with Dubai to host a new global awards platform that will recognise outstanding footballers, coaches and teams from around the world. The initiative, titled the FIFA World Football Awards, will begin next year and will bring together some of the sport’s most influential personalities and legends.
The announcement was made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has led the organisation since 2016, during his address at the World Sports Summit on Monday. Speaking in his keynote speech, Infantino highlighted FIFA’s long-term commitment to expanding the game globally, noting that the organisation continues to invest heavily in football development across continents.
He explained that FIFA’s vision is to ensure football growth is inclusive, with opportunities available to clubs and players in every region. According to Infantino, strengthening club football worldwide and creating pathways for players to compete at the highest level remain central goals of the organisation.
Beyond player support, FIFA also provides financial assistance to its 211 member associations to improve football infrastructure. In 2023, the organisation announced its objective to establish elite talent development academies in all member countries by the end of 2027.
Infantino revealed that around 100 academies are expected to be operational by next year, adding that the UAE could potentially become home to one more, further expanding the programme.
The World Sports Summit, taking place at Madinat Jumeirah from December 29 to December 30, is one of the region’s leading sports gatherings. The event is set to feature prominent global figures, including tennis star Novak Djokovic, MMA icon Khabib Nurmagomedov and former football great Ronaldo Nazario, reinforcing Dubai’s growing role as a hub for international sports events.
Infantino also highlighted how global partnerships, such as the one announced with Dubai, play a crucial role in FIFA’s broader strategy to modernise the sport and engage new audiences. By hosting major events and initiatives in different regions, FIFA aims to make football more accessible and culturally relevant across the globe. Dubai’s established infrastructure, international connectivity and experience in staging world-class events were cited as key factors in the decision, positioning the city as a natural partner for future football-related programmes and celebrations.
The FIFA World Football Awards are expected to go beyond traditional honours by celebrating leadership, innovation and contributions to the growth of the sport. Organisers indicated that the awards will recognise achievements not only on the pitch, but also off it, including coaching excellence, youth development and community impact. This broader scope reflects FIFA’s intention to highlight football’s social and cultural influence, while giving recognition to individuals and organisations that help shape the game’s future.
Dubai officials welcomed the announcement, noting that hosting the awards aligns with the emirate’s ambition to strengthen its presence in global sports and entertainment. Over the past decade, Dubai has invested heavily in facilities, events and partnerships that attract international athletes and fans. The collaboration with FIFA is expected to further enhance the city’s reputation as a destination for major sporting milestones and high-profile gatherings.
Industry experts believe the awards could become a key fixture on the global football calendar, drawing players, officials and fans from around the world each year. By combining FIFA’s global reach with Dubai’s event-hosting capabilities, the ceremony is likely to attract significant media attention and commercial interest. Analysts also point out that such events can have a lasting economic impact, boosting tourism, hospitality and related sectors in the host city.
Looking ahead, FIFA reiterated its commitment to using football as a tool for unity and development. Infantino emphasised that expanding access to quality training, facilities and competitive opportunities remains a priority, particularly in emerging football nations. As preparations begin for the first edition of the FIFA World Football Awards in Dubai, officials expressed optimism that the initiative would inspire future generations, strengthen international collaboration and reinforce football’s role as a truly global sport.
