The National Centre of Meteorology has confirmed the start of winter in the UAE, with residents expected to experience cooler temperatures and more pleasant weather conditions in the coming period.
UAE: Winter officially sets in as cooler conditions approach, confirms NCM

Winter has officially started in the UAE from December 22, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has announced.
However, signs of the seasonal change were felt earlier, as strong winds affected the country on December 18 and 19. Several regions experienced intense rainfall, while isolated areas reported flooding and hailstorms. In Dubai and surrounding areas, residents were required to take additional safety measures, with some adjusting daily routines, including travel and work schedules.
Authorities in Dubai responded promptly to manage the challenging conditions, prioritising public safety and maintaining essential services. During the period of unsettled weather, Dubai Police received and handled more than 39,000 emergency and assistance calls.
Across the UAE, official warnings were issued advising residents to remain alert as heavy rain and thunderstorms impacted the northern parts of the country before moving toward other emirates. Emergency text alerts were also sent to both residents and visitors, urging them to follow safety guidelines and take necessary precautions.
Meanwhile, the coldest temperature of the season so far was recorded on Saturday, December 20, at Jebel Jais. According to the NCM, temperatures dropped to 3.5°C around midnight, marking the lowest reading in the UAE this winter to date.
Meteorologists noted that winter in the UAE is typically characterised by cooler temperatures, increased cloud cover and the possibility of further rainfall, particularly in northern and mountainous areas. Residents can expect milder daytime conditions and noticeably cooler nights over the coming weeks. Authorities have advised people planning outdoor activities to stay informed about weather updates, as conditions may change quickly during the season. Motorists are also urged to drive carefully during periods of fog or rain, which are more common in winter. The NCM said it will continue to closely monitor weather patterns and issue timely advisories to ensure public awareness and safety throughout the winter months.
Officials also highlighted that winter weather can bring sudden drops in temperature, especially in desert and mountainous regions, where conditions may become particularly cold during the night and early morning hours. Campers and outdoor enthusiasts have been advised to prepare adequately by carrying warm clothing and checking forecasts before travelling. Fishermen and those heading out to sea were urged to monitor marine advisories, as stronger winds and rougher waters are more likely during this period. Authorities stressed that preparedness and awareness are key to minimising risks associated with seasonal weather changes.
In addition, public service departments across the UAE remain on alert to respond to any weather-related challenges that may arise during the winter season. Municipal teams, emergency responders and traffic authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure rapid response to flooding, reduced visibility and other potential hazards. Residents and visitors have been encouraged to use official channels for weather updates and emergency information. By following guidance and cooperating with authorities, the public can help maintain safety and ensure that daily life continues smoothly despite changing winter conditions.
