UAE: Jebel Jais shut temporarily following recent heavy rainfall; all activities halted

Jebel Jais has been temporarily closed after heavy rainfall affected the area. Authorities suspended all tourist and adventure activities as a safety precaution until weather conditions improve.

Jebel Jais has suspended all services on a temporary basis to undertake safety checks and maintenance work after challenging weather conditions impacted the area from December 17 to 19.

Officials said in a statement released on Tuesday that the recent downpour led to water accumulation in several sections of the mountain, prompting necessary maintenance measures to uphold safety requirements. As part of these precautions, certain roads have been closed temporarily while essential repair and inspection work is carried out.

Authorities confirmed that all recreational and tourism activities at Jebel Jais will remain suspended until further notice, allowing expert teams sufficient time to complete detailed inspections and risk assessments. Members of the public have also been advised to avoid camping in wadis during the current unstable weather period.

Warnings were issued about potential hazards caused by pooled water, including loose rocks and slippery terrain. Although hiking and climbing zones have not been officially shut, specialist teams are reviewing conditions, and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and steer clear of affected areas.

The reopening process will be gradual, with each section of the mountain evaluated separately before activities resume. Progress updates will be shared through official Jebel Jais communication channels.

Donald Bremner, chief executive of Marjan Lifestyle, said the temporary shutdown was driven by safety priorities, noting that the phased reopening would help protect visitors while safeguarding the natural environment.

Maintenance crews remain active on the mountain, and further announcements will be made once all assessments are finalised.

Authorities emphasised that the temporary closure reflects a proactive approach to risk management, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather. They noted that mountainous terrain is especially vulnerable after heavy rainfall, as water runoff can weaken surfaces and alter natural pathways. By allowing sufficient time for inspections and repairs, officials aim to minimise potential risks before reopening to the public. Visitors planning trips to Jebel Jais in the coming days are encouraged to monitor official updates and reschedule activities if necessary. The authorities reiterated that public cooperation is essential to ensure safety and support ongoing efforts to maintain Jebel Jais as a secure and sustainable destination for residents and tourists alike.

Officials also highlighted that coordination is underway between maintenance crews, safety specialists and local authorities to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the affected areas. This includes examining access roads, drainage systems, viewing platforms and activity zones to identify any damage caused by water accumulation. Advanced equipment is being used to detect potential structural weaknesses that may not be immediately visible. Authorities stressed that these precautionary measures are standard practice following severe weather events and are critical to maintaining long-term safety. Visitors were thanked for their patience and understanding as teams work diligently to restore full operations in a controlled and responsible manner.

In addition, authorities reminded residents and tourists that weather conditions in mountainous regions can change rapidly, increasing risks even after rainfall has subsided. They urged visitors to remain alert, follow posted warnings and respect any temporary barriers or closures in place. Emergency response teams remain on standby during the maintenance period to address any unforeseen situations. Officials also encouraged outdoor enthusiasts to choose alternative destinations until Jebel Jais reopens fully. By adhering to official guidance and safety advisories, visitors can help prevent accidents and ensure that the reopening process proceeds smoothly and without further disruption.
