Unsettled conditions: Dubai declares short-term shutdown of public parks, beaches

Dubai authorities have temporarily closed public parks and beaches as a safety precaution due to unstable weather conditions, urging residents and visitors to follow official guidance until conditions improve.

In response to unstable weather, Dubai Municipality announced the temporary closure of public parks and beaches across the emirate for two days — Thursday, December 18, and Friday, December 19.

The decision was taken as a precautionary step to protect public safety. Earlier, authorities in Dubai had cautioned residents against swimming or taking part in any marine activities due to rough sea conditions.
Ajman Municipality issued a similar notice, confirming that public parks in the emirate will remain closed until further notice or until weather conditions improve.

A low-pressure system moving across the region has triggered thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with conditions expected to worsen in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on Thursday night. Authorities across the UAE have urged residents to stay indoors where possible and strictly follow safety guidelines and instructions issued by official bodies.

Officials stressed that such preventive measures are essential during periods of severe weather to minimise risks to the public. Residents were encouraged to stay updated through official government channels and avoid non-essential travel, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas. Motorists were advised to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and remain alert for water accumulation on roads. Authorities also urged people to secure outdoor items and avoid gathering near beaches, parks, or open spaces until conditions stabilise. Emergency services remain on standby, and further announcements may be issued depending on how the weather system develops.

Authorities highlighted that the ongoing low-pressure system could bring sudden and intense rainfall in localized areas, increasing the risk of flash floods and water pooling in urban and rural regions. Residents were advised to avoid valleys, wadis, and other flood-prone areas, as water levels can rise rapidly. Families planning outdoor activities during this period were urged to postpone or relocate them to safe indoor locations. Public safety teams and municipal workers are actively monitoring affected areas, ready to respond to emergencies and assist residents if needed. Continuous updates from weather authorities will guide necessary adjustments to public safety measures.

Officials also reminded the public that maritime and recreational activities remain highly dangerous during the unstable weather. Swimming, boating, and other sea-related activities should be completely avoided until conditions return to normal. Schools, nurseries, and community centres were advised to implement precautionary measures for children and vulnerable groups, ensuring they remain safe indoors. Authorities encouraged residents to stay connected to official social media channels, mobile apps, and local news outlets for real-time information about closures, advisories, and any emergency alerts. Cooperation from the public is critical to minimise accidents and ensure safety during this period of adverse weather.
