Severe weather across UAE: Airlines release travel alerts amid heavy rain and strong winds

Airlines operating in the UAE have issued travel advisories as severe weather, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, affects flight schedules and prompts passengers to stay updated on possible delays.

Carriers and Dubai Airport released travel alerts for travellers departing between December 18 and 19 dates.

Wet and blustery conditions are forecast nationwide, potentially causing road disruptions and impacting airline timetables across the UAE this week.

Emirates said unsettled conditions are forecast from December 18 until midday December 19, advising Dubai-bound passengers during this window to reach the airport no less than four hours before departure time for smoother processing.

The airline also encouraged passengers to regularly check their flight status through official channels and allow extra time for travel to the airport, as traffic conditions may worsen during periods of heavy rain. Travellers were advised to follow instructions from airport staff and remain attentive to announcements regarding gate changes or schedule adjustments. Authorities highlighted that weather-related disruptions can change quickly, and flexibility is essential during such conditions. Passengers with connecting flights were urged to review onward travel plans in advance. Airlines reiterated that safety remains the top priority and thanked customers for their patience and cooperation during the period of unstable weather.

The airline cautioned that heavy rain and strong winds may reduce visibility on roads and make driving difficult, advising travellers to set aside additional travel time or consider using the Dubai Metro when possible.

As a safety measure, Emirates announced that First and Business Class passengers with confirmed Chauffeur Drive services will be collected one hour earlier than their originally scheduled pickup time.

“Passengers are asked to keep their contact information updated through the Manage Your Booking option to receive timely notifications,” the airline said, also recommending that travellers frequently review their flight status during this period.

With adverse weather continuing, flydubai advised passengers to reach Dubai International Airport (DXB) at least four hours before departure, anticipating possible traffic congestion or operational disruptions. Online check-in remains available from 48 hours up to 75 minutes prior to departure.

Travellers flying from DXB have been encouraged to verify their flight details directly with their airline and allow extra time for airport travel. Where feasible, passengers are advised to use the metro and plan journeys carefully to minimise delays.

Separately, Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo also released a weather advisory, stating: “Weather patterns across the UAE are expected to change, with forecasts indicating heavy rain and thunderstorms. As conditions evolve, flight operations may face intermittent disruptions at various times of the day.”

Passengers were urged to stay informed by monitoring flight updates, factor in additional travel time due to potential road delays, and remain attentive to airline communications.

Customers affected by disruptions may have the option to rebook flights or request refunds through airline self-service platforms, depending on how their travel plans are impacted.

Airlines have called on travellers to remain patient and plan ahead as unstable weather coincides with a busy holiday travel season across the country.

Aviation authorities highlighted that weather-related advisories are issued as a preventive measure to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety. Airlines and airport operators continue to coordinate closely with meteorological agencies, air traffic control, and ground services to manage schedules effectively during periods of uncertainty. Travellers were reminded that flight timings may change at short notice and are encouraged to remain flexible with their plans. Passengers with onward connections or time-sensitive commitments should consider contingency arrangements. By staying informed, arriving early, and following official guidance, travellers can reduce stress and navigate potential disruptions more comfortably during the ongoing period of unstable weather.
