Filled with devotion and joy, over 20,000 worshippers attended the first day of the nine-day Filipino Catholic custom, Simbang Gabi (evening Mass), on Monday at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai.
Other churches across the UAE also observed Simbang Gabi, a Filipino Christmas tradition dating back to the late 1600s during the Spanish colonial period. Filipino Catholics introduced the practice to the UAE in the early 2000s. Unlike in the Philippines, where Simbang Gabi is celebrated at dawn, the Mass in the UAE is usually scheduled for the evening.
“People of all ages attend — from senior citizens to babies in strollers or carried by their parents. Some arrived straight from work, while friends and families brought foldable chairs or mats to sit on,” a church official said.
Every Mass begins with Christmas hymns, and volunteers, including Dubai resident Mark Omayam, wore Santa costumes to distribute gifts to children.
To enhance the festive atmosphere and maintain tradition, popular treats such as puto bumbong (steamed rice pastry) and bibingka (rice cake) were available in the churchyard.
