At minimum six Bangladeshi peacekeepers dead, eight wounded in Sudan UN base incident

At least six Bangladeshi peacekeepers lost their lives and eight others were hurt after an assault on a United Nations facility in Abyei, Sudan, the Bangladesh Army confirmed on Saturday.
“The situation in the region remains unstable and engagements with terrorists are continuing,” the statement said, noting that authorities are making every effort to ensure medical care and conduct rescue operations for the wounded. Bangladesh remains among the biggest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, with its forces deployed for years in Abyei, a sensitive area contested by Sudan and South Sudan. Bangladesh continues to be one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, with troops long stationed in Abyei, a volatile territory disputed between Sudan and South Sudan.
“A drone strike was launched by separatist armed factions targeting the Kadugali Logistics Base under the UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei, Sudan yesterday (Saturday) between around 3.40pm and 3.50pm local time,” Bangladesh’s Inter-Service Public Relations said in a statement on Sunday.
The Bangladesh Army said security forces are continuing to assess the evolving situation on the ground while coordinating closely with the United Nations mission to stabilize the affected area. Additional protective measures have been reinforced around peacekeeping facilities to prevent further attacks. Officials stressed that the safety of peacekeepers remains a top priority amid rising tensions. The army also confirmed that injured personnel were evacuated to medical facilities for treatment, while critical cases are receiving specialized care. Authorities are monitoring developments closely and have assured families that all necessary support is being extended to those affected by the incident.
Bangladesh’s long-standing role in UN peacekeeping missions has earned international recognition for professionalism and sacrifice. Its troops have served in some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones, contributing to peacebuilding, civilian protection, and humanitarian assistance. The incident in Abyei highlights the increasing risks faced by peacekeepers operating in volatile regions. Bangladeshi officials reiterated their commitment to global peace efforts despite the dangers, emphasizing that such attacks will not deter the country from fulfilling its international responsibilities. The government also expressed pride in the courage and dedication shown by its deployed personnel.
United Nations officials condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of international law and a direct assault on peacekeeping operations. They called for an immediate investigation to identify those responsible and ensure accountability. The UN stressed that peacekeepers are deployed to maintain stability and protect civilians, not to become targets of violence. International partners echoed these concerns, urging armed groups to respect UN mandates and facilities. The incident has renewed discussions within the international community about strengthening security arrangements for peacekeeping missions operating in high-risk environments.
