UAE President Applauds Indian Expat’s Extraordinary Generosity Despite Financial Constraints

UAE President commends an Indian expatriate for remarkable generosity, recognising 42 charitable contributions made over the years despite earning a modest income and facing financial limitations.

An Indian expatriate living in the UAE has been formally recognised for his meaningful contributions to Awqaf Abu Dhabi, the Authority of Awqaf and Minors’ Funds Affairs. Sheikh Shakil, a long-time resident of Al Ain for nearly 21 years, was honoured by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a special ceremony held at Qasr Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi as part of the Life Endowment initiative. He was acknowledged alongside several other contributors whose support has played a vital role in the campaign’s success.

Shakil’s recognition stands out because of the personal sacrifices behind his generosity. Despite earning a modest income, he made a conscious decision to support the Life Endowment campaign, contributing a total of 42 donations in his own name as well as on behalf of his family members. His commitment reflects a deep belief in giving back to the community that has been his home for more than two decades.

Recalling the moment he was informed about the honour, Shakil said he was genuinely taken aback. He explained that he never expected his donations to result in such high-level recognition. Being invited to attend the ceremony and meet the UAE President was, for him, an emotional and unforgettable experience. He described the occasion as a true privilege and a memory he will cherish for the rest of his life. According to Shakil, the event reaffirmed the core values upon which the UAE has been built — generosity, compassion, and a strong sense of care for others.

Through Shakil’s story, Awqaf Abu Dhabi sought to underline a powerful message: the Life Endowment campaign is driven by the collective efforts of donors from all walks of life. Contributions come not only from major institutions and corporations, but also from individuals and families who give according to their means. The authority emphasised that every donation, regardless of its size, has value and contributes to the campaign’s wider impact. Shakil’s example demonstrates that consistent giving and sincere intention can create meaningful change.

The Life Endowment campaign was launched with the goal of ensuring sustainable financial support for healthcare services, particularly for patients suffering from chronic illnesses who cannot afford the high cost of long-term medical treatment. By providing ongoing funding, the initiative aims to ease the burden on vulnerable patients and their families, while also strengthening the healthcare system as a whole. Beyond immediate medical assistance, the campaign focuses on improving overall wellbeing, supporting long-term care solutions, and fostering a healthier, more resilient society.

Awqaf Abu Dhabi, established in May 2023, plays a central role in advancing the emirate’s endowment sector. Its mission is to maximise both social and financial impact by developing innovative investments and forming strategic partnerships that align with sustainability principles. Through its work, the authority seeks to ensure that endowments continue to serve the community effectively, now and in the future.

In addition to overseeing all endowment-related processes, Awqaf Abu Dhabi is responsible for managing the financial guardianship and development of assets belonging to minors, as well as individuals who are legally restricted from managing their own finances. By safeguarding and growing these funds, the authority contributes to greater financial security, social inclusion, and long-term stability for vulnerable groups within society.

The organisation is also actively involved in promoting awareness and understanding of endowments. It regularly organises conferences, seminars, and specialised events focused on best practices in managing and investing endowment and minors’ funds. Through these initiatives, Awqaf Abu Dhabi aims to encourage transparency, innovation, and efficiency within the sector.

At an emirate-wide level, the authority is working to modernise and reshape traditional endowment practices, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful in a rapidly changing world. By combining strong governance with community engagement, Awqaf Abu Dhabi strives to embed a culture of giving and sustainability across Abu Dhabi.

Shakil’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that philanthropy is not limited by income or status. His recognition by the UAE President highlights how individual acts of generosity, when guided by compassion and commitment, can contribute to broader social goals and inspire others to give.
