Dubai: Emirates Halts Flights to Lisbon Due to Portugal-Wide Strike

Emirates has suspended flights to Lisbon due to a nationwide strike in Portugal, which is disrupting transportation and services. Passengers are advised to monitor updates and consider alternative travel arrangements.

Emirates has announced the cancellation of multiple flights to and from Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday, December 11, due to a nationwide strike expected to involve nearly half of the country’s workforce. The walkout is in response to the Portuguese government’s proposed labour law reforms, which have triggered widespread discontent among employees across various sectors.

The Dubai-based carrier confirmed that its EK191 flight from Dubai to Lisbon and EK192 return flight from Lisbon to Dubai on December 11 will not operate. Additionally, flights EK193 from Dubai to Lisbon and EK194 from Lisbon to Dubai scheduled for the following day have also been cancelled. In an advisory posted on its official website, Emirates informed passengers that travelers connecting through Dubai on these specific Lisbon flights will not be accepted at their origin airports.

The airline urged affected customers who booked directly through Emirates to contact the company to explore alternative arrangements. Those who booked via travel agencies were advised to get in touch with their respective agencies to manage rebookings. Emirates emphasized that these measures are necessary due to the anticipated disruptions caused by the strike.

The general strike is expected to severely affect Portugal’s public transport network, with railways, metro systems, and bus services likely to experience significant interruptions. The country’s national airline has already started notifying passengers and cancelling flights in anticipation of the widespread disruptions.

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, remains a highly sought-after destination for international travelers, including many visitors from the UAE. The city is renowned for its rich historical heritage, vibrant cultural scene, delectable cuisine, and relatively affordable cost of living compared to other major European capitals. In recent years, Lisbon has also gained popularity as a hub for digital nomads, attracting professionals and tourists who wish to experience its unique combination of work-friendly infrastructure and leisurely lifestyle.

Emirates’ decision to cancel flights underscores the impact of large-scale industrial actions on international travel and highlights the importance of monitoring local developments when planning trips. Travelers heading to Portugal in the coming days are advised to remain updated on the situation and coordinate closely with airlines or travel agencies to adjust their itineraries accordingly.

As Portugal braces for a major labour strike, both residents and tourists may face considerable disruptions, from limited public transportation to delays in services across the country. The ongoing industrial action reflects growing tensions over labour reforms, while also reminding global travelers of the potential ripple effects such strikes can have on international connectivity and travel plans.
