Etihad Rail passenger guide: Routes, schedules, parking and connections explained

Etihad Rail’s passenger network has become more convenient for UAE residents following the opening of two additional stations, giving travellers more options for exploring the country by train.

The latest additions are Al Yalayis station in Dubai and Al Dhaid station in Sharjah. Both stations opened to passengers on Wednesday, expanding access to Etihad Rail’s growing passenger service.

The response from travellers was strong, with demand prompting Etihad Rail to add six extra services during the weekend.

For passengers planning to use the national railway, however, travelling by train involves more than simply purchasing a ticket. Knowing the available destinations, departure schedules, parking arrangements and options for reaching your final destination can make the journey considerably easier.

Here is a breakdown of the key information passengers should know before setting off.

Which destinations can passengers reach?

Etihad Rail passenger services currently connect several locations across the UAE.

Passengers can travel to:

  • Abu Dhabi

  • Dubai

  • Fujairah

  • Al Dhaid

The network provides an alternative to travelling between the emirates by car and offers passengers the opportunity to combine train journeys with local public transport and other forms of transportation.

With the opening of Al Yalayis and Al Dhaid stations, passengers in additional parts of Dubai and Sharjah can now access the network more conveniently.

Are train timings the same every day?

No. Etihad Rail operates different service schedules depending on whether the journey takes place on a weekday or during the weekend.

Passengers should therefore check the timetable for their specific travel date before heading to the station.

The schedules can differ depending on the route and day, so checking the applicable departure and arrival information in advance can help passengers avoid arriving at the station at the wrong time.

The additional weekend services announced following strong demand also mean that passengers should check the latest timetable rather than relying on an older schedule.

Parking facilities at Etihad Rail stations

Passengers travelling to the railway stations by car have parking facilities available across the network.

However, the number of spaces and the applicable charges vary from one station to another.

Some locations provide free parking, while others operate paid facilities with different hourly or daily rates.

Here is what passengers need to know about parking at the different stations.

Mohamed bin Zayed City station, Abu Dhabi

Passengers using the Mohamed bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi have access to 258 parking spaces.

Eight of those spaces are designated for electric vehicles.

The parking facility is operated through Darb, Abu Dhabi’s road and transport payment system.

Drivers can leave their vehicles free of charge for the first 15 minutes.

After the free period, the applicable rate is Dh5 per hour for vehicles parked for up to three hours.

A vehicle parked for as long as 24 hours will be charged Dh15.

For passengers who need to leave their cars for several days, the parking fee is Dh20 per day.

There is also a specific overnight arrangement. Vehicles entering the facility between 2am and 6am will be charged Dh20 for a 24-hour period.

Parking payments are deducted from the user’s Darb wallet.

Passengers who do not have a Darb account can instead complete payment using a QR code.

Drivers should make sure the parking fee is settled within 24 hours.

Failure to complete the required payment within that period could result in a fine.

Al Yalayis station in Dubai

The newly opened Al Yalayis station has 265 parking spaces for passengers.

Unlike some other facilities, parking charges at this location apply around the clock, seven days a week.

This includes public holidays.

The first 15 minutes are free.

After that period, the parking fee is Dh5 per hour.

Passengers leaving their vehicles for five hours or longer will be charged the full-day rate of Dh30.

There is also a separate overnight parking charge.

Vehicles parked between 1am and 5am will be subject to a Dh40 rate.

Payments can be completed through the Parkin app within one day.

Passengers should make sure they complete the payment within the required period, as failure to do so can result in a Dh150 fine.

With the station being newly opened and demand for Etihad Rail services high, passengers may want to allow sufficient time for parking before their scheduled train departure.

Al Dhaid station

Passengers travelling from Al Dhaid have access to free parking at the station.

The facility has space for 26 cars.

Unlike the paid parking facilities at some other stations, travellers using these spaces do not have to pay a parking fee.

The relatively limited number of spaces means passengers may still want to consider arriving with enough time to find a parking space, particularly during busy periods.

Fujairah station

Fujairah station has 263 parking spaces available for passengers.

The parking charge is Dh10 per day.

This provides a straightforward option for travellers who plan to leave their cars at the station while taking the train to another destination.

Getting to your final destination after the train journey

Reaching the railway station is only one part of a passenger’s journey.

Depending on where they get off, travellers have several options for continuing to their final destination.

Etihad Rail has arrangements involving shuttle buses and connections with local public transport, while taxis, e-hailing services and rental cars provide additional alternatives.

The options differ between stations.

Connections from Mohamed bin Zayed City station

Passengers arriving at Mohamed bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi can use three shuttle-bus services.

The shuttle journeys need to be selected and booked at the same time as the train ticket.

Each passenger pays Dh10 for the shuttle service.

The three destinations are:

  • Reem Mall on Reem Island

  • ADNEC Centre in Al Rawdah

  • ADNOC Headquarters on the Corniche

The estimated road journey to Reem Mall is around 55 minutes.

The trip to ADNEC Centre takes approximately 30 minutes.

The journey to ADNOC Headquarters is around 45 minutes.

The shuttle services operate in both directions, connecting passengers with the station from 7am until 9pm.

Travellers should check the detailed weekday and weekend schedules before booking because shuttle departure times may vary.

The latest schedules are available through Etihad Rail’s official information channels.

Continuing your journey from Al Yalayis station

Passengers arriving at Al Yalayis station in Dubai have several ways to continue their trip.

One option is to walk across the footbridge to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station.

Travellers can also use a shuttle service to make the connection.

Another option is the F38 bus, which provides access to areas including Production City and Dubai Sports City.

For visitors who want to explore more of Dubai using public transportation, a Nol One-Day Pass is another option.

The pass costs Dh22 and can allow eligible unlimited journeys on Dubai’s metro, tram and bus services for the applicable period.

This can make it possible for passengers to combine their Etihad Rail journey with Dubai’s existing public transport network rather than arranging a separate taxi or rental car for every part of their trip.

Bus connections from Al Dhaid station

Passengers using Al Dhaid station can also continue their journeys by bus.

Three bus services connect the station with different destinations.

These include:

  • Jubail bus station

  • Al Sajaa bus station

  • Al Madam bus station

The availability of these connections gives passengers additional ways to reach different parts of Sharjah after completing their train journey.

Travellers should check the relevant bus schedule before setting off, particularly if they have a time-sensitive onward journey.

Getting around from Fujairah station

Passengers arriving at Fujairah station have a bus stop located very close to the railway station.

The Etihad Rail bus stop is approximately 35 metres from the station.

The short distance means passengers can access the bus connection without needing a lengthy transfer after leaving the train.

For travellers heading elsewhere in Fujairah, other transport options can also be considered depending on their destination.

Other transport options available

Passengers are not limited to buses and scheduled shuttle services after arriving at an Etihad Rail station.

E-hailing services and car rental facilities are available at all the stations.

This gives travellers greater flexibility if their final destination is not directly connected by a shuttle or public bus.

Someone travelling for business, for example, may choose a rental car for greater flexibility, while another passenger may prefer an e-hailing service for a direct journey to their destination.

The availability of these options means passengers can combine rail travel with road transportation according to their individual needs.

Plan the complete journey, not just the train ride

For first-time passengers, one of the most important things to remember is that a train ticket covers the railway portion of the journey, while the onward trip may require additional planning.

A traveller may need to consider how they will get to the station, where they will leave their vehicle, how long they need to arrive before departure and how they will travel after reaching their destination.

For passengers driving to the station, checking parking arrangements in advance can help avoid unexpected costs.

This is particularly important because parking policies differ significantly.

At Al Dhaid, parking is free, while Fujairah charges Dh10 per day.

Mohamed bin Zayed City station uses a different pricing structure based on parking duration, while Al Yalayis has hourly, daily and overnight rates.

Understanding those differences can help passengers plan their travel budget.

Check the timetable before leaving home

Train and shuttle schedules should also be checked before beginning the journey.

Etihad Rail services operate according to different weekday and weekend timetables, and additional services may be introduced when demand is high.

A passenger who arrives based on an outdated timetable could face a longer wait or miss their planned departure.

The same applies to connecting buses and shuttles.

Passengers using a shuttle from Mohamed bin Zayed City station, for example, need to book the service alongside their train ticket and should make sure the selected shuttle time matches their wider itinerary.

Arriving early can make the journey easier

Passengers travelling during busy periods may benefit from arriving at the station with some additional time.

Those driving need to account for the possibility of finding a parking space and completing any required payment arrangements.

Travellers using public transport or ride-hailing services should similarly allow time for the journey to the station.

This becomes particularly relevant when demand is high.

The decision by Etihad Rail to add six weekend services following strong customer demand indicates that some journeys may attract significant numbers of passengers.

Planning ahead can make the overall experience more straightforward.

Combining rail and public transport

One of the advantages of the expanding passenger network is the ability to combine train travel with existing public transport services.

Dubai provides an example through the connection between Al Yalayis station and Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station.

Passengers can use the footbridge or shuttle connection and then continue their journeys through Dubai’s metro network.

The F38 bus also provides another option for reaching Production City and Dubai Sports City.

A Nol One-Day Pass can further extend the possibilities for passengers planning to make several eligible journeys across Dubai’s public transportation system.

This means a traveller can potentially use one trip to combine inter-emirate rail travel with metro, tram and bus services.

Different stations offer different facilities

The two newly opened stations do not have identical arrangements.

Al Yalayis in Dubai has 265 parking spaces and operates paid parking throughout the week.

Al Dhaid has only 26 parking spaces, but parking there is free.

Fujairah offers 263 spaces at Dh10 per day.

Mohamed bin Zayed City station provides 258 spaces, including eight for electric vehicles, with parking managed through Darb.

These differences are worth checking before travelling because the most convenient option may depend on whether passengers are driving, using public transport or arranging a ride after reaching the station.

A growing rail option for UAE residents

The opening of Al Yalayis and Al Dhaid stations marks another step in the expansion of passenger rail services in the UAE.

For residents, the network provides an alternative to driving between emirates and creates new possibilities for weekend trips, business travel and leisure journeys.

The addition of extra weekend services following strong demand also suggests that passengers are showing considerable interest in using the new connections.

As the network becomes more accessible, understanding the practical details around each station will become increasingly useful.

Passengers should therefore consider the entire journey before travelling: the train schedule, route, parking arrangements, onward transport and return plans.

Quick checklist before travelling

Before heading to an Etihad Rail station, passengers should consider the following:

  • Confirm the departure time for the exact day of travel.

  • Check whether the service is a weekday or weekend departure.

  • Review parking availability and charges at the selected station.

  • If using Mohamed bin Zayed City station, make sure the Darb payment arrangements are understood.

  • At Al Yalayis, remember that parking charges apply throughout the day and night.

  • If travelling from Al Dhaid, note that only 26 free parking spaces are available.

  • At Fujairah, factor the Dh10 daily parking charge into the travel budget.

  • Book the Mohamed bin Zayed City shuttle at the same time as the train ticket if required.

  • Check onward bus and shuttle schedules before departure.

  • Consider using Dubai’s metro, tram and bus network when travelling onward from Al Yalayis.

  • Keep e-hailing and car rental services in mind if public transport does not reach the final destination.

  • Allow extra time for parking and transfers, particularly during busy weekends.

With the passenger network continuing to expand, Etihad Rail is becoming an increasingly useful option for travelling between different parts of the UAE. A little preparation before leaving home can help passengers make the most of the service, avoid unnecessary delays and plan their entire journey from the station to their final destination.
