Sharjah Police confiscated a vehicle after its driver was caught performing hazardous driving manoeuvres in a residential community, putting public safety and nearby residents at risk.

Sharjah Police announced on Saturday, May 9, that they had taken action against a motorist who was caught driving recklessly and performing dangerous stunts in a residential part of the emirate. Authorities said the driver’s behaviour posed a serious threat to public safety and disturbed residents living in the surrounding neighbourhood.
According to police, the incident came to light after reports were received from members of the public who witnessed the reckless driving activity. A video later released by the authorities showed a black car carrying out risky drifting-style movements on a public road within a residential area.
In the footage, the vehicle could be seen sliding sideways across the street in an uncontrolled manner before suddenly moving off the paved road and onto a sandy roadside section. Moments later, the driver accelerated aggressively back toward the main road, creating large clouds of dust while the tyres produced loud screeching sounds.
Police officials stated that such behaviour endangers not only the driver but also pedestrians, nearby residents, and other road users. They emphasized that reckless stunts carried out in populated areas can easily lead to serious accidents, property damage, or injuries.
Following the initial reports, Sharjah Police immediately began an investigation into the incident. Authorities reviewed surveillance camera footage from the area and also relied on information and observations provided by local residents who witnessed the dangerous driving.
Using the collected evidence, police were able to identify the vehicle involved in the incident within a short period of time. After tracing the driver, authorities confiscated the car and initiated legal procedures against the individual responsible.
Sharjah Police stressed that they maintain a zero-tolerance approach toward reckless driving and dangerous behaviour on public roads. Officials noted that drifting, excessive speeding, and stunt driving are considered serious traffic violations because they threaten community safety and disrupt public order.
Authorities also urged motorists to drive responsibly and comply fully with traffic regulations, especially in residential areas where families, children, and pedestrians may be present. Police warned that irresponsible driving behaviour can carry severe legal consequences, including vehicle impoundment, heavy fines, and possible criminal charges depending on the severity of the offence.
In addition, Sharjah Police encouraged members of the public to continue reporting dangerous driving incidents whenever they witness behaviour that could put others at risk. Officials said cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies plays an important role in helping maintain road safety and preventing accidents across the emirate.

Authorities explained that motorists who drive recklessly or operate vehicles in a manner that threatens the safety of others may face multiple penalties at the same time. These punishments are designed to discourage irresponsible driving practices that could result in accidents, injuries, or damage to public property.
Under UAE traffic laws, reckless driving offences that place lives or public safety at risk can result in a Dh2,000 fine. In addition to the monetary penalty, drivers may receive 23 black points on their traffic record, which is considered a significant violation under the country’s road safety system.
Police also noted that vehicles involved in such offences can be impounded for up to 60 days. During this period, the owner is not permitted to use or retrieve the vehicle unless all legal conditions are fulfilled. To recover the impounded vehicle after the designated period, motorists may also be required to pay a release fee of Dh15,000.
Officials stressed that these measures are intended to strengthen road discipline and reduce risky behaviour that threatens the safety of communities, particularly in residential areas where reckless driving can have serious consequences.
Authorities further warned motorists against making illegal modifications to vehicles, particularly changes involving the engine, exhaust system, chassis, or structural components that alter the vehicle’s original specifications without official approval.
According to traffic regulations, carrying out unauthorised modifications can lead to a Dh1,000 fine along with 12 black points being added to the driver’s traffic file. In addition, vehicles found to have illegal modifications may be impounded for 90 days.
Once the impoundment period ends, vehicle owners may also be required to pay a release fee of Dh5,000 before the car can be returned. Officials explained that modifications designed to increase speed, create excessive noise, or enhance drifting capabilities are among the violations commonly targeted during inspections and enforcement campaigns.
Police said such modifications not only violate road safety regulations but may also compromise vehicle stability and increase the likelihood of serious accidents.
Sharjah’s updated impoundment penalties
Authorities also highlighted newer regulations introduced in Sharjah regarding the release of impounded vehicles. Beginning January 8, 2025, the emirate implemented stricter financial penalties for a number of serious traffic offences as part of broader efforts to improve public safety and reduce dangerous driving practices.
Under the updated system, motorists whose vehicles are impounded for reckless driving or similar dangerous offences may face substantially higher release fees than before. For example, drivers involved in reckless driving incidents or individuals caught riding motorcycles in prohibited areas are now required to pay Dh20,000 to recover their vehicles after the impoundment period is completed.
Similarly, even harsher penalties apply in cases involving driving without a valid licence. In such situations, the release fee for an impounded vehicle can reach Dh30,000, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities treat unlicensed driving offences.
Officials stated that the revised penalties were introduced to serve as a stronger deterrent against dangerous behaviour on the roads and to encourage motorists to comply with traffic laws and licensing requirements.
How vehicle impoundment works in the UAE
Vehicle impoundment is considered one of the strictest traffic-related penalties imposed in the UAE and is often applied alongside fines, black points, or additional legal action. Authorities use impoundment measures primarily for serious violations that endanger road users or disturb public order.
When a vehicle is impounded, authorities either tow it to an official storage facility or, in some cases, require owners to keep the vehicle at a designated location under specific conditions. During the impoundment period, the vehicle cannot legally be driven or used until authorities formally authorise its release.
Traffic authorities across the UAE commonly impose impoundment penalties for offences such as reckless driving, drifting, jumping red lights, excessive speeding, street racing, dangerous overtaking, and illegal modifications that increase vehicle noise or performance beyond approved limits.
