Dubai: Pile-up involving multiple vehicles disrupts peak-hour traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road

A collision involving several vehicles on Sheikh Zayed Road has caused significant delays during rush hour, slowing traffic movement and prompting authorities to urge motorists to drive carefully.

Dubai Police reported on Wednesday morning, January 14, that a serious road incident occurred on Sheikh Zayed Road, affecting traffic flow across the area.

According to authorities, the crash involved several vehicles and resulted in heavy congestion along one of the city’s busiest highways. The incident took place on the stretch facing Global Village, in the direction of Jebel Ali.

The collision caused delays for morning commuters, with journey times increasing significantly, as reflected on navigation and traffic monitoring apps.

Dubai Police urged drivers to remain alert while passing through the area, consider alternative routes where possible, and stay updated through official traffic advisories to ensure safety and minimise disruption.

Traffic congestion was particularly heavy during peak morning hours as emergency teams worked to manage the aftermath of the collision. Lane closures and slowed vehicle movement led to long queues stretching several kilometres in both directions. Commuters reported delays of up to an hour in some areas, especially for those travelling toward major business districts. Authorities coordinated traffic diversion measures to ease the bottleneck, while tow trucks were deployed to clear damaged vehicles from the roadway as quickly as possible.

Police patrols and traffic control units were stationed along affected sections of Sheikh Zayed Road to maintain order and ensure the safety of motorists. Officers were seen directing vehicles away from the most congested lanes, while electronic message boards alerted drivers to the incident ahead. The Roads and Transport Authority also monitored traffic conditions in real time, adjusting signal timings on surrounding roads to accommodate the increased volume of diverted traffic.

Dubai Police reiterated the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during busy commuting hours. Drivers were reminded to maintain safe following distances, avoid sudden lane changes, and remain attentive to road conditions. Authorities stressed that many multi-vehicle accidents occur due to distracted driving or failure to adapt speed to traffic conditions, especially during peak periods when traffic density is high.

The incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of major transport corridors to disruptions caused by accidents. Sheikh Zayed Road, which connects key commercial and residential areas, often experiences severe delays when incidents occur. Traffic experts note that even minor collisions can have a ripple effect across the wider road network, underscoring the need for cautious driving and rapid incident response to minimise broader congestion.

As traffic gradually returned to normal later in the morning, authorities confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing. Drivers were encouraged to continue monitoring official updates and traffic apps throughout the day, as residual congestion could persist in nearby areas. Officials also advised motorists to allow extra travel time during peak hours and to consider public transport options when possible to reduce pressure on major roads.
