BCCI Directs Kolkata Knight Riders to Part Ways with Bangladesh’s Mustafizur

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been directed to part ways with Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, according to a statement made on Saturday by Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The decision comes at a time when diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh are experiencing renewed strain.

Speaking to Indian news agency ANI, Saikia confirmed that the cricket board had formally instructed the IPL franchise to remove Mustafizur from their squad. He explained that the move was linked to broader developments unfolding between the two neighboring countries. While emphasizing that the board’s focus remains on ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament, Saikia noted that the franchise would be permitted to sign a replacement player if it chose to do so, subject to approval from the BCCI.

“Considering the recent situation and developments across the region, the BCCI has communicated to Kolkata Knight Riders that they must release Mustafizur Rahman from their team,” Saikia said. “The franchise is free to request a replacement, and the board will consider and approve such a request.”

The decision follows a series of incidents that have heightened political and social tensions between India and Bangladesh. One of the most significant triggers occurred last month, when protests erupted near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. Demonstrators gathered in response to the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu factory worker in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. Authorities in Bangladesh reported that Das was attacked by a mob following allegations that he had made offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad. The incident sparked widespread outrage, particularly among minority communities, and led to the arrest of 12 individuals in connection with his death.

This event further strained bilateral relations that were already under pressure due to political developments in Bangladesh. In 2024, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi after facing large-scale protests in her home country. Her departure and subsequent presence in India added another layer of complexity to the relationship between the two governments.

Against this backdrop, Mustafizur Rahman’s inclusion in the IPL has become a sensitive issue. While the BCCI did not directly cite the protests or political events as the sole reason for its directive, officials acknowledged that the broader environment played a role in the decision.

Mustafizur, now 30 years old, is one of Bangladesh’s most recognizable cricketing figures and has been a regular participant in the IPL over the years. Known for his left-arm pace bowling and deceptive cutters, he has represented several franchises since making his IPL debut. His past teams include Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals.

Over the course of his IPL career, Mustafizur has appeared in 60 matches and taken 65 wickets, making him one of the more successful overseas bowlers from Bangladesh to compete in the league. His consistent performances have earned him respect among teammates and fans alike, and he has often been praised for his adaptability to Indian conditions.

In last month’s IPL auction, Kolkata Knight Riders secured Mustafizur’s services for 92 million Indian rupees. The price tag made him the most expensive Bangladeshi player ever bought at an IPL auction, highlighting the franchise’s confidence in his abilities and experience. At the time, the signing was seen as a major boost to KKR’s bowling lineup ahead of the new season.

However, the latest directive means that KKR will now have to revisit their squad composition just weeks before the tournament begins. The franchise has not yet issued an official statement regarding Mustafizur’s release or announced who might replace him.

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League is scheduled to begin on March 26. The tournament will take place shortly after the conclusion of the Twenty20 World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting in February.
