Dubai Police have penalised 90 people and seized their electric scooters after they were caught carrying out hazardous stunts on designated sports tracks at Kite Beach, officials confirmed on Saturday, December 27.
The authorities stressed that such irresponsible actions pose serious risks to riders as well as other members of the public, reiterating their strict stance against violations of safety laws and regulations.
With the cooler winter season drawing larger crowds to the beach for evening strolls and family recreation, stunt riding in busy locations such as Kite Beach significantly increases the likelihood of accidents.
Police have advised both residents and tourists to strictly adhere to traffic and safety guidelines to help avoid incidents and maintain a safe environment across public leisure spaces.
As part of wider enforcement efforts, Dubai Police said patrols have been intensified across popular waterfronts and recreational zones to monitor e-scooter use and ensure compliance with regulations. Riders are reminded that e-scooters are permitted only in designated areas and must be operated responsibly, with protective gear worn at all times. Authorities noted that violations may result in fines, confiscation of vehicles and further legal action if repeated. Public awareness campaigns are also being rolled out to educate users on safe riding practices, proper lane usage and speed limits, aiming to reduce accidents and promote a culture of shared responsibility in crowded public spaces.
Electric scooters and e-bikes are widely seen as practical, environmentally friendly transport options, but their rapid adoption has also brought growing safety concerns. An increase in rule-breaking and fatal incidents has sparked calls from some residents for stricter controls or complete restrictions in residential neighbourhoods. Others, however, believe banning them altogether would unfairly impact commuters who depend on micromobility for everyday travel.
Safety data has intensified the discussion. During the first five months of 2025, Dubai recorded 13 deaths linked to improper e-scooter use and jaywalking, marking a worrying rise in serious incidents. The previous year painted a similar picture, with 254 reported crashes involving e-scooters and bicycles, leading to 10 fatalities and 259 people injured across the city.
Communities have increasingly expressed frustration over riders ignoring traffic laws and pedestrian safety. In response, some residential areas, including Victory Heights and Jumeirah Beach Residences, have imposed complete bans on e-scooters and similar devices to protect residents and reduce risks within shared spaces.
Concerns over micromobility safety extend beyond Dubai. In Ajman, police have previously urged parents to be cautious about allowing children to ride bicycles or electric scooters on public roads or between moving vehicles. Officials warned that using these devices outside designated zones puts children at high risk of serious accidents and also endangers other road users.
The issue becomes more pronounced during cooler months and school holidays, when children are more likely to take their bikes and scooters outdoors. Authorities and road safety specialists have stressed that parental supervision and precautionary measures are essential before children are allowed to ride.
Road safety expert Mustafa Aldah previously highlighted the critical role parents play in protecting their children. While outdoor activities are important for young people, he advised parents to carefully consider whether their children have the maturity and awareness needed to handle traffic conditions safely and responsibly.
