A man reportedly jumped from an upper floor inside Masjid Al Haram in Saudi Arabia, prompting emergency response, concern among worshippers, and investigations into circumstances surrounding an apparent suicide attempt.

A man reportedly leapt from an upper level of the Grand Mosque, known as Masjid Al Haram, in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The Special Forces responsible for the security of the Grand Mosque confirmed they swiftly handled the situation, during which a security personnel member was hurt while attempting to stop the man’s fall. Officials said both the individual and the injured officer were taken to medical facilities for treatment, and all required legal procedures were carried out.
In an official statement, Haram security authorities said the incident involved a person who attempted to take his own life from the upper floors of the Grand Mosque. They added that a security officer sustained injuries while trying to prevent the individual from hitting the ground at the time of the fall. Both were immediately provided with necessary medical care, and formal processes were completed.
Commenting on the incident, the Chief Imam of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr Abdur Rahman As Sudais, urged pilgrims to follow rules and guidelines, respect the sanctity of the holy site, uphold proper Islamic conduct, and focus on worship and obedience.
He further stressed that one of the core objectives of Islamic law is the protection of life and avoiding self-destruction, citing the Quranic verse: “And do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands.”
The incident has prompted renewed discussions around safety, mental health awareness, and crowd management within the holy mosque, which receives millions of worshippers annually. Authorities reiterated that security teams are trained to respond swiftly to emergencies to protect lives and maintain order in the sacred space. Officials also urged visitors and pilgrims to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel, and immediately report any concerning behaviour. Emphasising compassion and responsibility, religious scholars noted the importance of supporting individuals facing distress, while reminding the public that preserving life is a fundamental principle in Islam.
