UAE Fishermen Reel in Giant 137kg Tuna Near Fujairah Coast

Fishermen off the coast of Fujairah in the UAE caught a massive 137kg tuna, showcasing the region’s rich marine life and the skill and experience of local fishing communities.

A video shared on Instagram by Fujairah Today captured the thrilling moment when local fishermen hauled in an enormous tuna weighing 137kg, marking a proud achievement for both the emirate and its fishing community.

The footage shows the giant fish violently thrashing in the water as it resists capture, while four fishermen exert tremendous effort to lift it onto the boat. Even after being secured on board, the tuna continued to struggle, a vivid display of its strength and vitality. This extraordinary catch underscores the abundance of marine life in Fujairah’s waters, further highlighting the emirate as one of the UAE’s premier fishing destinations. The current fishing season has already seen increased activity, and this rare capture has generated excitement among local fishers and enthusiasts alike.

While the video celebrates the richness of Fujairah’s marine ecosystem, it also comes against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by authorities to safeguard these waters. On November 15, the Fujairah Environment Authority (FEA) conducted a major enforcement operation, seizing six fishing vessels found operating illegally within the protected Bird Island Reserve.

FEA Director Asila Al Mualla explained that the vessels were intercepted during routine inspections, supported by daily monitoring, scheduled field visits, and the use of advanced surveillance technology. These systems are instrumental in detecting potential violations early, helping authorities respond swiftly to illegal activity. Al Mualla highlighted that fishing within designated marine reserves constitutes a serious environmental violation, carrying significant legal consequences.

The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between supporting traditional livelihoods and protecting natural habitats. Fujairah’s authorities have consistently emphasized the importance of sustainable fishing practices, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas such as Bird Island, which is home to a variety of protected species. By cracking down on illegal operations, the FEA aims to preserve the integrity of marine reserves, ensuring that these ecosystems continue to thrive for future generations.

This combination of human skill and environmental stewardship reflects Fujairah’s commitment to both celebrating its rich fishing heritage and maintaining the health of its marine environments. The remarkable 137kg tuna haul not only showcases the expertise of local fishermen but also highlights the need for responsible management of the emirate’s natural resources, reinforcing Fujairah’s standing as a leading destination for both fishing and marine conservation in the UAE.
